A 100-year-old man Sunday became the first centenarian to complete a marathon when he finished the 26.2-mile event in Toronto.

Fauja Singh, a British citizen who was born in India, completed the run just before 6 p.m. local time in eight hours, 11 minutes and 5.9 seconds, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

It was Singh's eighth marathon. He set a record in the 90-plus age category in 2003 — also in the Toronto marathon — finishing in five hours, 40 minutes and one second.

However, this year's event was marred by the death of a 27-year-old man who collapsed just 320 yards from the finish line.

The man was taken from the course about 11:15 a.m. and transported to a hospital, where he later died.

Police did not confirm if the man was competing in the marathon, half-marathon or 5-kilometer run being held Sunday, but the Canadian Press reported that it appeared he suffered a heart attack while running the half-marathon.

About 22,000 people participated in the three races, and the marathon was won by Kenneth Mungara of Kenya in a time of 2:09:51.

Meanwhile, Singh, who was the last runner to complete the course, said he was overjoyed at his achievement.

"Beating his original prediction, he's overjoyed," his coach and translator Harmander Singh said.

"Earlier, just before we came around the [final] corner, he said, 'Achieving this will be like getting married again.'

"He's absolutely overjoyed, he's achieved his lifelong wish."

The coach said his runner had been aiming for a time of about nine hours.

While in Toronto, Fauja Singh on Thursday broke world records for runners older than 100 in eight different distances ranging from 100 meters to 5,000 meters.

Singh, who speaks only Punjabi, was born on a farm in India in April 1911 and is 5-feet-8 and weighs just 115 pounds.

He has said previously that part of his secret is that he eats a light vegetarian diet of mainly tea, toast and curry.

Singh took up running about 20 years ago after losing his wife and child in tragic circumstances.

Yeah, it's a "copy/paste" but it's been like this forever.

With the death of a runner in the Little Rock Marathon two weeks ago, as well as deaths in the 2007 Chicago Marathon and the 2007 US Men’s Olympic Trials, a number of people have recently asked the question, “why do runners die during marathons?”

The four major circumstances that lead to marathon runner deaths appear to be: heart disease in runners over 35 years; genetic heart defects in runners under 35; hyponatremia or low blood sodium levels; and heat related illnesses, such as heat stroke.

Heart Disease or Coronary Artery Death
One of the most common causes of death in runners during marathons is heart attack caused by underlying coronary artery diseases. These heart attacks are brought on by the combination of the intense physical stress of running for an extended duration and the pre-existing disease in the runner’s heart or a lack of cardiac fitness to handle the race.

This type of death typically occurs in runners that are over the age of 35 and can occur even in races as short as half-marathons. Coronary Artery Deaths are most common if the race is conducted under hot and humid conditions, which places additional stress on the heart as it struggles cool the body.

During a long running event, the heart comes under more and more stress as the body begins to fall into exhaustion. If dehydration starts to set in, the heart will work even harder to push a diminishing volume of blood through the body. This combination is extraordinarily hard on the heart and if the heart already suffers from heart disease, the combination can be fatal. The US Registry of Sudden Death in Athletes found that about 14% of all sudden athlete deaths could be attributed to coronary artery deaths.

Did he ever run a marathon in the course of smoking, drinking, chewing tobacco? Chances are if he say, started smoking heavily in his late teens, if he decided to run a marathon in his 30s or even 50's, he'd keel over, because his breathing would be like sucking air thru a small straw...

But, i do get what you are saying, because I had a great-grandmother who lived to 104, and didn't have the healthiest diet either.

His only downfall is that he was a huge padres/chargers fan lol. That side of my family are immortals,if by natural causes none died under 90.  When my great grandfather passed, his brother, who was 90 something,  drove by himself cross-country to San Diego to attend the funeral.guy looked to be in his 70's..

well its pretty good for you if its made properly, when you see the amount and variety of herbs and seasonings that go into some curries, there are enough antioxidants for a lifetime.

It's called...

tada...

GENETICS.

Nothing you can do about it at the moment. Some live like fuk and survive, while others eat healthy, run every day and die at 40.

It's all genetics.

Same here, my grandfather is almost 101, from a family of miners, worked the mines from when he was 12, smoked and drank since he was 14, always ate regular food, red meat and veg and potatoes, served 5 years in North Africa in WW2, worked as a postman after the war, took up hiking when he retired, still lives alone, is going deaf and joints are wreaked but still smokes and drinks, as posted above, young people are pussies, our grandparents generation real hardworking tough people.

I have run one 26.2 timed marathon and they give you a litle black chip you put on your shoe and it marks your time after you go over every mile mat so there is def no cheatin and they have you time after every mile. I ran the first 3 miles in a little over 19 minutes wich is fast for a marathon however I couldnt keep up that pace and finished at 3 hours and 32minuts, still not to bad. at the hal;f mile point I was at 1 hour and 33 minutes. This was my first marathon so I should hve trained harder to be more consistent as after every mile my time get a tad bit slower. not suppose to be like that. however I did finish with a great time for my age group as I ran this when I was 21. It broke down to around 9 minutes a mile.  but I can run single miles in a litttle over 5 minutes and like I said I ran the first 3 milees in 19 minutes and some change. I do not run anymore so my times would be shitty as of now. but yes people do die after running marathons or during a marathon there is actually a story behind the marathon about back in the day someone was suppose to deliver a letter and died 26.2 miles during the delivery thats how they came up with the distance.

Do marathon runners take a longer time to peak? Like mid or late 30's?
