Regardless of the "pros" getting bigger and freakier, I would still pick this look as the one I would work towards.

Anyone else have this up on their wall growing up as a teenager?

Amazing... really motivating to look at that. Full muscle bellies on a balanced physique that looks healthy. The muscle looks like it belongs there too, like it's his! He probably walked around in this condition or close to it consistantly. So different from what you see today and really impressive.

I copy pasted wrong image. The Ulyses douche has great lines though, fucked about with in most pics granted. The pic that first really inspired me bb wise was nubret.

For a few years at his peak, Mike was a good friend of mine to the point where I was instrumental in searching for his bro (long story for another time) to show up in time to win the NPC National Championships.

We had many discussions about the world of bodybuilding and I gotta say that of all the top pros I've ever met ... Mike was among the most intelligent.

Short version ...

Ray was a very strange guy who appeared to be waiting for some form of hostility within the US. There may be lots more to that but I'm not knowledgeable in that regards.

Mike despised Arnold and according to many insiders .... had a right to feel that way as a result of the 'fiasco' in Australia and his affiliation with Mr. Weider.

I, myself, heard "stuff" from the judges of that event upon their return to the states regarding a 'questionable decision' but nothing more until the fans who were not there starting raising hell.

And when Mike and myself and most of the contestants had a 6 hours meeting after a local contest, it became evident that Mike was most hostile to Arnold and the IFBB officials who judged that event.

Notice that I am not saying that Mike was correct, but only stating the facts to the best of my recollection.

Wasn't he a drug addict at the time of the O, people forget it's not a contest it's a job interview for the future leader of the sport.

Was much too young to have that poster, but I had the opportunity to meet Mike, and speak with Mike rather frequently, both by telephone and by email.
Whomever has touched a weight in their lives, in the hopes of building a better physique, would obviously want to look like that.
This may sound silly, because all muscle is functional by its very nature, but Mike looks to be holding what is functional muscle, not excess or "bloofy" muscle.
There is not doubt he was assisted in his quest to build the optimal physique, but what is presented in your picture appears (especially to the mind of a late teen/early twenties trainee) to be attainable with loads of hard work.

MAXKANE, I also had the opportunity to meet Nubret and Paco also and entirely agree with you that he was the best bodybuilder of his time.

I sat with Nubret on the Venice Beach wall for at least two to three hours as we talked about competitive bodybuilding and he felt that it was somewhat useless to compete within the IFBB against Arnold due to Arnold's influence within the IFBB,,,,, or something like that.

A darn nice guy and certainly deserving of your accolades.

Having read literally every word penned by Mike Mentzer, and for that matter Arthur Jones, one can easily see that Mike was an extremist.
I simply cannot fathom why, a man who scored the perfect 300, would diet the way he documented for the 1979 Olympia. Clearly, from even a neophyte's perspective, he overdieted with the hope of beating Zane at Zane's game: conditioning. What Mike was left with was a very flat chest.

One of the most impressive series of pictures I have seen is the ones where Mike is on the beach, and from the Universe win.
