Question to Basile, regarding Arnold and volume training
« on: October 20, 2011, 08:53:39 AM »
Hey Vince, so you know Arnold personally and he even stayed in your house for some weeks back in the day. So are all those very high volume training he was doing just magazine bs or was he really doing it?

I hope Basille answers this, I always suspected he was doing less and talking a lot more...

Arnold has been to my gym twice and my home once. Ray Mentzer was the bodybuilder who stayed at my place for many months.

I saw Arnold train a few times in Golds Gym in 1968 and again when he was in Sydney. He did a lot of volume. Guys like Arnold are the ones who bodybuilders still follow to this day. They do several exercises for each body part and do several sets of each exercise. Probably something like 10 to 20 sets per muscle.

thank you. what about the weekly frequencies? those guys were training each body part how often? I ask this because Im training more than 1x a week now and Im feeling great, thought I would go into catabilic zone but its happening quite the opposite, maybe its because my body was not used to it but its surely working. So perhaps all that volume bs was not bs after all.

Same here,2 X a week since April and I`m stonger than hell and looking great.

I think Arnold trained everything 2 x a week,though others will say 3 X.

It was 6 days a week, bodyparts twice weekly, and 20 sets for big bodyparts and 10-12 as Vince said earlier.

Pretty sure that it was 2 times a week as follows: Days 1 and 4: chest and back Days 2 and 5: delts and arms Days 3 and 6: legs Day 7: off In fact this twice a week training frequency was the common training protocol up until the  early 90s

There was a fly on the wall description of Arnold training chest in the first pumping iron book and it was pretty much this.

1. Flat bench press 7 sets pyramiding up in weight for 6 and one pump set

2. Incline press 5 sets pyramiding up in weight for 4 and one pump set.

3. Flat flys 3 sets same weight.

Off season workout 6 months before Olympia.
