In this case she is Spanish, and in many Spanish speaking cultures, a woman keeps her last name to signify she was not born into the family she is married into. They also give their names to their children. I had a roommate from the Canary Islands in College and his name was Fernando Antonio Martin Diez, Martin being his mother's family name.
