Why are Democrats so vehemently opposed to a balanced budget amendment? Why are they so against balancing the budget and reducing spending to pre-President Downgrade levels? Are these people really that addicted to spending money we don't have?

Because budget appropriations are more important than the health of the country, that goes for both sides, not just the dems.  Congress has been more concerned with politics rather than the people for decades nothing really new with this.
