Actually, it was Nigeria.

Richards complained about the NPC system trying to keep him down, so he used his dual citizenship to win Nigeria's national championship to turn pro in 1992.

The "legend" has a legendary temper, as in smashing his trophy when he lost to Rich Gaspari at a state-level show (so the story goes).
