One doesn't turn gay. They may be closeted or may otherwise not act on feelings of same sex attraction, thus "coming out" at a later point in their lives. Talk to any person who came out later and they'll tell you they always had gay feelings. Most people, whether they act on their same sex attraction or not are aware of it at least by the time they reach puberty and usually for sometime before that.
