Service Animals
« on: December 04, 2011, 05:05:42 PM »
Lately I have noticed that when I go almost anywhere, someone has a (small to medium sized) dog with them—even in places where having a dog would seem very in appropriate: grocery stores, fine restaurants, museums, etc.  The other day when I saw a dog sniffing around the hot food bar in a grocery store and the owner not even paying attention I snapped!  I asked the store manager why they allowed this.  He explained that the store is required by law to allow “service animals.”

Fair enough.  If it were a seeing eye dog I would have no objection, but these are not seeing eye dogs.  The manager explained that some people have a diagnosed "anxiety disorder" and having their pet with them allows them to cope with their anxiety; the dogs are therefore service animals and they are permitted in the store.  Oye.  ::)

The grocery store now displays this sign...  Apparently, some people are pretending to use their dog as a service animal just because they like to have the pet with them even when they have no legitimate need to bring it along. By the way, "service animals" are not always dogs.  Sometimes they are birds... cats... snakes...!  Where does it end? ???

I love dogs, but I can relate.  last week I was in work and one of the owners had their dog in there.  it kept trying to get at my lunch and trying to sniff/lick my dress slacks.  they just let the thing run around the place without even being with it, it was aggravating as fuck.  not what you expect working at a technology firm.

Anymore any kind of issue, real or imagined qualifies one for a service animal. Society has become totally pussified

hahha what bullshit, only service animal is dogs for the blind, sounds like stupid people making up excuses to bring their small dogs with them everywhere, pathetic.  If they have anxiety problem they need to go to the doctor and get on medication, not bring an animal with them everywhere you are right Bay!

Bay you should have asked that person who or what organization trained her dog to be a service animal LOL!

As I said, it's not just dogs anymore.  People around here try to use birds (a parrot on their shoulder), cats, even a snake, as an "anxiety pet."  When did people become so weak? ???

I don't know but that is pathetic and should be outlawed, they are exploiting the law.  If they have anxiety get on meds from the doctor geez, but these people obviously aren't interested in solving any anxiety problem, because it doesn't exist!  They just want their animal with them everywhere.

Bay, you are one grouchy fucker sometimes. I never understand why it's such a big deal to have a dog in a store - go to France, they go everywhere - yet some rank, dirty, stinky fucking humans are mooching around sneezing, coughing and generally being repulsive.

i have a shitzu-poodle mix he is extremly well behaved and i take him everywhere and completly understand when stores
say "NO DOGS ALLOWED"  i just turn around and walk out because i am not leaving him chained up outside to wait for me.
i think my dog is better behaved and cleaner then most kids i see in stores nowadays anyway, but i know which stores allow my
dog and i patronize them more then the ones that dont especially when i am out walking him and want to run in the store for a few
things, but i completly understand people not wanting dogs in stores or other places animals should not be, just wish that
law applied FOR CERTAIN PEOPLE AND KIDS  :-\

I love small furry animals; they're great - especially in soups.

So I guess what "reppingfor20" is trying to say is the only legit service dogs are for the blind? Is that what I'm hearing? (Seeing)

The international assistance animal community has categorized three types of assistance animals:[1]

   1. Guide animal—to guide the blind
   2. Hearing animal—to signal the hearing impaired
   3. Service animal—to do work for persons with disabilities other than blindness or deafness.

number 3 is a little too broad, like Bay said it get's exploited.

Really? How about diabetes? Certain dogs are trained to stay by their diabetic masters. They are trained to sense when the blood sugar drops dangerously low and alerting their owner. They are with them 24/7. Even when the owner is asleep the dog can sense when levels are to low and wakes the owner. Hope that helped.

Or dogs that can tell when their owner is about to have a seizure.

They have machines that can do that.

No this is so the dog can alert people of the person having a seizure, not knowing that they are going to have one.  If somebody has a seizure there is nothing you can do to stop it, so what is the point of the dog?  Other people around or if no one is around the dog isn't going to be able to do anything.  Also there are medications for people who have seizures.

Not true...some dogs can help stop the seizure from happening...don't know how but the lick their masters face and rub up against and cuddle them and it calms the person down....not saying every person, but some.

many service dogs are just small dogs that people bring to hospitals and make sick people happy.
