You are generalizing again. For such a successful Managing Director/CEO type you sure seem... not quite bright. What with repeating the same mistake time and time again. Didn't you learn your lesson already?

Many CEOs forgo salary (or receive a token $1 salary) in lieu of bonuses. If a company with such a CEO has a poor year (see RIM for example) which is possible to have for reasons outside the control of the CEO, then come the end of the year, the total income of might very well be $1. I'd hardly call that well-paid.

Sometime CEO's choose a token salary and request stock options - a purely speculative move - so depending on how the stock market plays out they may end up with a lot of money. Or they may end up with a lot of useless paper. I'd hardly call that well-paid.
