laminate flooring HELP! SORRY, Off Topic
« on: December 11, 2011, 05:46:45 PM »
I'm laying laminate flooring in a room that's about 550 sqft. Several different corners, steps, closet, etc...

I'm more of an athlete, than mathlete...  How do I figure out which direction is better to lay the flooring in order to eliminate the most waste?

???

Start from the middle of the floor and work your way to the edges.  Once you get everything set, then glue them down.

the worst part is some ends if you have like a space of a foot or so since the boards are almost 4ft long and you have to use the end with the channel in order for it to lock in so you lose pretty much an entire board since now it wont lock flush with the joint on the short end. Get a tool to cut the bottom of the doorway trim so you can slide the flooring right under it that way youre not making some crazy ass cuts, itll look way cleaner.

For wood and laminate floors you should factor 7 to 10% waste.

The only things that will EVER touch my 400-500 year old Heart Pine Floor (age of the wood) is Tung Oil or Boiled Linseed Oil.

The only way to know for sure is to draw a layout of the room and post it on here.

Is there some sort of problem there Man of Steel?

You are aware of the Long Leaf Pine (Pinus Palustris) and what it was used for in the South?  I have all of the original floors in my house.  Actually, my entire house was built out of Heart Pine.

It takes 200 years minimum for one tree to become mostly Heart Wood.  There is no more Long Leaf Pine of that age to be found anywhere as it was used extensively in the 18th and 19th Centuries.

The only way to get it now is from old structures or at the bottom of rivers.

How can you have a 400-500 year old pine floor???  Couldn't be original with the property..

Age of the trees+plus age of the house= Age of the wood

To get heart pine, the the Long Leaf Pine has to mature to about 200-500 years.  The trees used in my house   were at least 300 years-500 years old before cut based on historical record.  Then you factor in the age of the house when it was built in 1850 and you have your range.

Rest of the house is 1920's white oak.  Real nice stuff...

This is going in the newly finished basement!

Thanks, did that but with all the angles in this room I'm afraid I should have factored in way more!

Laminate is cheap. Don't worry about waste. Like with hardwood flooring run the laminate perpendicular to the floor joists.

Thanks, I got 550 sqft @ $1.50 = $825 + underlayment.

Kind of sucks....  :P

Visually, running the laminate so that the pattern runs the long way in a room will generally make a room appear larger. However, if a room is long an narrow, this pattern will accentuate this.

Good deal!  Laminate has come a long way and since its in a finished basement, its a great choice for that type of space.
