Soreness doesn't indicate proper stimulation, dumbfuck. If you ran a marathon today, I bet you your legs would be extremely sore. Would they grow any muscle? Hell no.

The primary muscle group targeted by the bench press is the pectoralis major. This is the muscle group that makes up the bulk of what we consider to be the chest. With modifications of the bench, either an incline or decline, you can also target the pectoralis minor, or lower pectorals, as well.

No.

The primary muscles used in the bench press (all variations) is the triceps with some front delt assistence and a tiny bit of chest involvement at the bottom, where the move somewhat mimics a flye movement.  Your triceps will give out way before your chest was worked to failure in that tiny ROM anyways....

The function of the pecs is to bring the upper arm across the body, it isnt a fucking pressing movement.

Notice how EVERYONE in your gym benches and pretty much no one has decent pecs?

Most overated excercise there is and shoulder wrecker for many.

What do you recommend for a typical chest workout?

What I notice in my gym is that the gym rats who do a bazillion cable crossovers have poorer pec development than the bench pressers.

You forget this is a bodybuilding board. Yes, the bench is triceps, delts and of course LATS! HAHA, there was a great thread with people arguing about lat involvement in the bench press a while back.  All the shitty magazines will tell you to exhaust with flys first if your press stagnates.  ::)

lol @ thinking flat bench works triceps harder than pecs. You can barely feel your triceps doing anything unless you do close grip. flat bench is a great chest builder in my experience

A "chest workout". Decline movements...flys...chest workout. Haha.
