Tate used a hell of a lot more weight than Ronnie ever did.

Ronnie routinely repped away with way over tate's raw max, with a wide grip and his elbows flared.

700 in a multiply shirt is nothing earthshattering as a SHW, ronnie could have easily hit that in one of todays single ply's after a few months learning the groove.

it's so annoying when people try to act opinionated and buck conventional wisdom that has worked for bodybuilders for 50+ years.

the barbell bench press performed at shoulder-width apart hits primarily the chest if elbows are up. if elbows are down close to your torso triceps take over.

the end.

The problem is that how do you know the bench press is the exercise that stimulates the most amount of muscle growth? Most bodybuilders do a variety of exercises and most incorporate similar movements (incline db presses, flies, dips, pec deck, etc). Unless you did a controlled study where you had certain bodybuilders only do bench press, another set only do inclines, etc, then measured the results, you can more accurately pinpoint who had the most growth and what exercise attributed to the growth. Since most bbers do anywhere from 4-6 different exercises, how can you say that flat bench pressing stimulates the most growth? Bc Arnold benched a lot? He also did other things for chest.

I could (actually do) agree that DB bench is a better exercise than BB bench for several reasons, e.g.:

(1) Can go to failure on your own without risking death
(2) Joint trajectories aren't restricted by the bar = less shoulder pain in my experience

The problem is that hoisting them up into place can be tough for heavier sets and you have to progress slower since they only go up in 5-lb increments usually whereas you can add the 2.5-lbers with BB bench.

To argue that flies are a better exercise for chest growth than a pressing movement is lunacy though.

well when you have a bunch of clowns claiming ridiculous statement such as "oh arnold did bench press... ronnie benched" they think it is the  best exercise  ::) ::)

makes me laugh

IMO benching isn't the best chest builder, however it is the best upper body exercise. Guys that can bench heavy have a fuller looking upper body. Can you build big legs without squats? Ya but they don't look the same as a guy who does them.

You know how some guys have huge chests, shoulders, and triceps but something just doesn't look right? they just dont flow together? I wonder if that has something to do with the fact that they may not do exercises that uses several bodyparts.

Why argue that benching works as much of your chest as it does shoulders and triceps, isnt that a good thing?

Did Ronnies squatting, deadlifting, and benching kind of tie his whole body together?

makes complete sense.

Matter of fact is that with the bench press you can handle the most weight out of any of the upper body exercises. You can work the weight you use on benches (db or bb) way way above any other upperbody exercise... that is the reason it is the best pec builder. It's not the best exercise for isolating pecs by a long shot.. granted... but because it allows you to use the most weight, while heavily involving the pecs, you can push your pec development the most with this exercise alone.

Guys that can bench heavy have a fuller looking upper body because that is what their genetics dictate. If they didn't bench press, they would still have a fuller looking upper body than others. Again, you can't make a blanket statement that benching leads to a fuller looking upper body without some proof to back it up.

All the guys that have built their chests on cable flys look unimpressive compared to the ones that built them with bench regardless of genetics. And your right theres no proof that push ups dont work as good for upper body mass as heavy bench press does lol. But seeing as how alot of strong powerlifters have massive chests and upper bodies that were built on bench press, im gonna assume they know what they`re doing compared to the little bodybuilder that claims otherwise.

they could have stayed natural and done bench press and gotten the same results.  instead they chose the easy way with machines.  only the toughest of men are brave enough to use a barbell

But I tend to think that when your on copious amounts of shit it doesnt matter what you do to stimulate the muscle, push ups will work just as good as a full out free weight chest routine lol

And didnt Dorian swear by incline bench press  ???

Slight incline dumbbell press, that's all. Do 10-12 sets a week.

yes that's what I'm saying.

some people act like bench press is harder/more effective.

I'm not sure tate really beats him in any lift maybe the squat. Lots of powerlifters are not as strong as people think.

Get things straight. Bench press works the pecs, NO question about that.
But regarding it being the best excercise however, it contains too many variables----form, arm length, reps, groove etc etc etc.

But make no question about it. Benching works the chest, period.

I've been doing sticking point training in the power rack for the last two weeks. we're going to go another month and see if our flat bench strength goes up. shit is HARD, but you are sore as fuck the next day.

and after that I'll probably do something completely different, Like machine drop sets....15, 12 , 10, 8

Point being...don't be a dildo and think that there is only one right answer to a question  8)
