He is close to second in NH as well.   I think people are getting a little scared of Newt and dont trust romney.

Me - right now Paul / Bachmann would be ideal.

Ron Paul Soars In GOP Race, But Foreign Policy Views Are An Albatross
IBD's Capital Hill ^ | 12/13/2011 | Sean Higgins

Posted on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 5:24:45 PM by Slyscribe

Ron Paul is surging in Iowa according to the latest polls, but if the libertarian Texas Republican does become the flavor of the week, his foreign policy views will likely leave Republican voters with a sour taste.

The latest IBD/TIPP survey asked respondents which GOP presidential candidate they preferred on four issues: the economy, budget/taxes, health care and foreign policy. Paul is third behind Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, being the preferred choice by Republicans on the first three issues by margins of 9%, 10%, and 6%, respectively.

As today’s IBD story touched on, Paul is weakest on foreign policy, where he is the choice of just 4%, tying him with Jon Huntsman.

Poll: Front-runner Newt Gingrich's lead in early-voting Iowa has evaporated
By Jonathan Easley - 12/13/11 03:04 PM ET

Newt Gingrich’s onetime 9-point lead over the GOP field in Iowa is down to 1 point, and it’s Ron Paul who's breathing down his neck.

Gingrich is at 22 percent, according to a Public Policy Poll released on Tuesday. He’s followed by Paul at 21 percent
, Mitt Romney at 16 percent, Michele Bachmann at 11 percent, Rick Perry at 9 percent, Rick Santorum at 8 percent, Jon Huntsman at 5 percent, and Gary Johnson at 1 percent.

Gingrich’s favorability with Tea Party supporters plummeted this week from 35 percent to 24 percent, bringing his overall favorability down from 62 percent favorable versus 31 percent unfavorable, to only 52 percent favorable versus 40 percent unfavorable.

Paul’s favorability numbers meanwhile, were almost the inverse of Gingrich’s. The Texas lawmaker is now at 61 percent favorable versus 31 percent unfavorable, compared to last week when he was at 52 percent favorable and 38 percent unfavorable.

Since Gingrich’s surprising rise in the polls, Paul has trained his sights on the former House Speaker, accusing him in attack ads of “serial hypocrisy” and of “selling access” as a Washington insider.

The entire GOP field went after Gingrich at Saturday’s primary debate, criticizing him as a lifelong politician and for his multiple divorces — and voters seem to have taken notice.

Fifty-two percent of likely Iowa caucus-goers said they watched Saturday's debate, according to the survey.

Perhaps even more important than the poll numbers leading into the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses are the commitment levels of likely caucus-goers to their candidates. Conventional wisdom says a candidate needs a strong ground game in Iowa to turn out voters for the caucus-style voting, and here again, Paul leads the field.

Seventy-seven percent of Paul’s supporters say they are definitely gong to show up on election day to vote for him, while only 54 percent said the same of Gingrich. Romney also beats Gingrich in this category, with 67 percent of his supporters saying they will definitely show up.

Paul also leads among voters who say they have finalized their decision, taking 29 percent, compared to 21 percent for Gingrich and 18 percent for Romney.

Rick Perry, whose campaign has focused on the state’s Christian conservatives through his ads highlighting the “War on Christmas” and “Don’t ask, don’t tell,” remains unchanged at 9 percent. However, an American Research Group poll released this week showed him surging to 13 percent, up from 5 percent in November.

In another bad sign for Romney, Public Policy Polling found that voters widely view Gingrich as the most electable candidate, with 30 percent, followed by Romney at 21 percent and Paul at 14 percent.

Iowa voters have historically come out strong for the more socially conservative candidates, which in part helped propel Mike Huckabee to a victory in the 2008 presidential contest. That might not hold true in this cycle, however, as Romney trails despite 39 percent saying he has stronger values, compared to Gingrich at 18 percent

He has spent a lot of money there and Romney has not, so not too surprised.  I think he'll have respectable showings in Iowa and NH, but not really anywhere else (including his home state of Texas).

If Ron Paul ever moved into 1st, and MSNBC starts its non stop attack on Paul (whoever is in first place gets smeared the most), then you will see 240 do the same...

PPP POLL BOMBSHELL: Ron Paul Is Close To A Win In Iowa
Business Insider ^ | 12/13/2011 | Grace Wyler

Ron Paul, the once-forgotten presidential candidate, is picking up steam in Iowa and now appears poised to overtake frontrunner Newt Gingrich, according to a new survey released today from the left-leaning Public Policy Polling.

The poll finds support for Gingrich has slipped to 22%, with Ron Paul just behind with 21%. Mitt Romney trails in third place with 16%.

That's a five-point drop in favorability for Gingrich, who has raced to the top of the Republican presidential field over the past month. PPP found Gingrich's favorability numbers have fallen 19 points over the past week.

Meanwhile, support for Paul is on the rise, particularly among younger voters and voters who identify themselves as "new." Among likely caucus-goers under age 45, Paul leads Gingrich 30-16. The numbers are nearly flipped for caucus-goers over age 45.

No big deal to pick someone you ran against as VP, but very odd to pick someone as your VP that picked your opponent over you via an endorsement.

What makes you think he'd do that? He's stuck to his guns on every issue - why would he ruin his reputation by picking some slimebag like Newt or Mitt?

not saying those two.   I'm talking about someone like Paul Ryan, Gov. McDonnell, etc

Again, why would he pick someone who supports a foreign policy that puts America at jeopardy? Why would he pick someone who isn't half as consistent as he is?

Because he has to win the election and he will have to unite the GOP behind him.   Right now - the GOP is not united behind him at all.
