Should candidates be allowed to SKIP debates?

It's generally believed by many that Perry would be winning the nomination - had he never stepped upon the debate stage.

True?  And is that okay?  What if the 2012 repub nominee decides NBC is too liberal, and skips the debate?  Cool?

I think they did. 

My thinking is that in 2012, an obama scared to face newt could opt to SKIP the debates, citing newt's ill manner or something silly, and avoid getting his pants pulled down nationally.
