If I was to build a new home...

Could I have the walls covered in lath and plaster instead of drywall?  Does anyone still do that?

Extremely expensive?

You can find someone that is capable of doing it.  It shouldn`t be too expensive if you find the right plasterer.  Its a skilled job for sure.  I have lath and plaster throughout and you have to be sure that you attend to any cracks immediately or else you will have a nasty problem on your hands.

Thanks for the info adonis!

I look at my current place, and the craftsmanship is mind boggling.  I can't comprehend how most of it was even possible.  I'm located in a neighborhood though, and would rather be somewhere more private.  I want to make it a goal to find a private lot somewhere, and someday get the right group together to build a similar old Tudor Revival.

I mean to think that back in the 1920's, with hand tools, these people were able to get these massive beams into place, frame this, put the million narrow lath boards on, lay all the flooring perfectly, finish it all perfectly, build the massive fireplaces.  It just amazes me.

I can't understand it.

I think you will pay more for the work but well worth it IMO. That's beautiful work on that house

Labor costs were less, no osha, no nada.
