Comedians with political agendas
« on: December 21, 2011, 07:55:50 AM »
A comedian with a political agenda is NOT a comedian. They are simply people who don’t have enough guts to become political commentators.  They have nothing at stake and are allowed to spread misinformation under the guise of "I'm just kidding", when anyone with half a brain knows that they're not.  Discuss.

I completely disagree with everything you've said

shit the original stand up comedian was the court jester who was the only person who could make jokes about the king

Politics is a classic target of jokesters and why would they have nothing at stake (aren't they citizens) and who says it's "misinformation"

You really shouldn't talk stink about Bill Maher like that.  He's not that stupid.

Ok.  Yes he is . . . .

you're confusing "discussing politics" with having a political agenda".  they are two completely diiferent things.  One requires thought and imagination, the other involves spoonfeeding lemmings so as to create a base audience who will feel obliged to laugh at everything you say because you're on "their side".  The former requires talent, the latter does not.

If a comedian talk about politics and at some point or another offends everyone in the room but allows everyone in the room to laugh at eachother and themselves, that is comedy.  WHen a person gathers a bunch of people together who pre emptively know what he's goign to be talking about and also who he's going to be making fun of, thats weak.

Intelligent people can and true fans of comedy can tell the difference.  You apparently cannot.

for example.  i could cut and paste an hour of clips from George Carlin that taken by themselves would make you think he is a far right conservative.  I could also string together an hour of clips that would make you think he's a far left liberal.  He wanted to make fun of everyone and alienate no one.  HE WAS A COMEDIAN.

I don't think Carlin was concerned in the least if he alienated anyone (same goes for Hicks - watch that interview with the BBC)

I also don't understand your point about a "political agenda"

do you think Hicks had no political agenda?

His entire act was promoting his political beliefs with jokes

Can you give me an example of the kind of comedian you think has political agenda and is therefore, according to your premise is NOT a comedian

you just reinforced my point with that statement too.  Carlin paid no mind to who he would or would not offend.  he wasn't catering to any specific demographic.  he was an original thinker with thoughts of his own.  thats why these comedians are a shrinking minority nowadays

Bill Maher - not funny

I like him too but he's simply not funny

so you're saying that these two have political agendas and therefore are "not funny" or that they are not comedians anymore?

btw - Miller used to be funny until he became a right winger

Maher can be hysterical at times (IMO of course) and at other times he can sound like a whiny bitch

Hicks, Carlin, Louis CK, etc.. are almost always funny on virtually any topic

i don't know i guess you can be a comedian and not be funny.  if so, thats what they are.  but i wouldn't really even consider either of them comedians anymore.  just glib little men who hate on everyone who doesn't think like them.  They're like the bullies on the playground where everyone laughs at all their jokes because they don't want to come into his line of fire.

and miller was never very funny.  he's still telling the same jokes he's just not telling you jokes that you want to hear.

Maher is not funny.  he just seems like such an angry little man.  you wouldn't think he's getting the pussy that he does.  i would be in a great mood if i was tapping what he taps.  He has his kneepadder crowd and his show caters to them and it's like he doesn't even have to try anymore.

FYI Louis CK "Shameless" is in my top 5 comedy routines of all time.  When i heard his "suck a bag of dicks" joke I literally had to pause the tv because i was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe.

Some comedian that just goes up on stage and starts sneeking in a political agenda, that's kinda lame.  But if there's nothing hidden and that's the purpose of the act or show then I have no problem with that.

Colbert is funny as hell.  Dennis Miller is a failure at everything he does.  Stewart is not that funny but does a good job at highlighting political shit that is so absurd it's funny on it's own...  Bill maher is the most uninformed commedian who tries to comment seriously on politics.  Sometimes he's right but often you can tell he hasn't really put in any research on a topic.  And it's annoying how upset he gets if you don't laugh at his jokes.

As long as it's up front, I don't have a problem with comedians getting political in their act or show.

Let me guess, that's a Fox guy, right?

The obsession with Fox on this board is hilarious. It literally consumes the lives of some of you.

I have literally never watched a Fox News Channel talk show so I couldn't tell you. I have much better things to do with my time than watch any of those shitty channels. The only reason I know about what Matthews says is because one of the blogs I read loves making fun of him.

If I'm going to sit down and watch TV it certainly won't be to watch some fucking hacks with journalism or polysci degrees talk about economics and other technical subjects.

On one show Maher can be talking about how awesome Ron Paul is and then on the next he will be talking like he never said any of that and Paul is the worst in the world lol...  Hannity is consistent in his absolute hate of Ron Paul.  I have no idea what that means and I'm sure it doesn't help lol...
