In an effort to gain support for the payroll tax cut extension, the Obama administration launched a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #40dollars that asks what people can buy with the additional amount every paycheck. The amount is the weekly average that Americans would save under the current payroll tax cut bill and would affect about 160 million Americans. On Tuesday, the House rejected a Senate compromise that would have expanded the tax cut for 2 months.

I'm not arguing qwith the $40, i'm arguing where it is coming from.      They are collapsing SS at a time when it is already in trouble instead of cuttingh spending elsewhere.

Would you agree with a payroll tax cut as long as spending was cut elsewhere and that money went to SS trust funds?

I'm asking because the payroll tax (at least the employer's portion of it) is one of the most damaging taxes on the economy.

You can't cut payroll taxes with the sort of contingent liabilities we have in SS and Medicare without cutting benes or spending elsewhere and using those savings to make up the shortfall.   Its simple math.
