It will be interesting to see how much film footage has been taken from previous Ridley productions.

Can anyone recall the cost for each minute of SFX that is shot ... and how much of that expensive footage actually  gets shown on the silver screen? I posted that once but have forgotten , but I do know that millions of dollars in any single production can be saved by using film footage from previous work that was cut for various reasons....

And one of the main reasons for not using that expensive footage is that it's not used due to time constrictions as most films like to restrict themselves to roughly 90 minutes.

Here are some storyline comments:

A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life's ultimate mystery.

the film is set in space for the most part. Similar to that of "ALIEN"; the jumping off point to this project. The film's name "Prometheus" is that of the space vessel, used by a crew of select individuals who set off to explore and investigate fragments of "Alien DNA".

The film itself revolves around the Space Jockey creature; as seen in the original film ALIEN (1979). When the team of scientists embark on this journey, they get stranded on an Alien world which tests their mental and physical limits.

Prometheus is also largely based on the creation of mankind, life and the earth. Prometheus involves a team of scientists, "The Company" representatives and robot / synthetics which investigate and search for keys to unlock man's ultimate mystery. But in the process, they threaten the future existence of mankind and are faced with unimaginable horrors.

The Aliens themselves are said to be much larger than the original "Xenomorphs" we are used to. However, their overall construction will be easily noticable to that of the original Alien canon.

Prometheus will be much more than just an Alien sci-fi horror. Ridley Scott is digging deeper for this project and Prometheus will unlock many questions and will touch on many aspects of life and existence.

No worries because Ridley is, again, my favorite director of film.  He and his staff do their research and work harder than most for a quality of cinema not often duplicated by what passes for his contemporaries.  If you know him, tell him I said he's The Man.  Kinda sorta a John Ford of a different genre.  For me.

In my mind, one of the major reasons for the success of the Alien movie franchise was due to H.R. Giger - the acclaimed Swiss surrealist artist.

REEVES, Sorry but I never met him but I did come close to meeting him one day on the BLADE RUNNER set as a good USMC friend of mine had  a decent role in the film and I was always welcome to watch the filming process ..... but never did have the time to do so.

BTW... I did not like that movie at all and fell asleep a couple of times while giving it a second and third chance.

Your "JOHN FORD" description is pretty damn accurate and you will have the opportunity to see a good number of the films (in fact ... eleven films that I am aware of) that he is in the process of producing. Check him out on IMDB.COM.

Saw a Disney trailer of a forthcoming movie about some guy ending up on an alien planet and joining forces with the good aliens to overcome the bad aliens.

The title is simply some dude's name but that film looks pretty damn interesting... especially the one scene in which he has to fight some foreign monster and he looks up to see it and has that, "I'm gonna shit in my pants!" expression on his face.

That single shot convnced me that this is a movie I'll be looking for.

Movies I've seen lately:

WE BOUGHT A ZOO ..... It was OK but the critics are giving it an A+ rating, whereas I will give it a B+.

THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN .... I fell asleep two and one-half times. It was beautifully shot but exceptionally boring. I think that each and every scene was too damn long. (C+)

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO .... I liked the Swedish version but this one stunk and the ending was totally different. (C)

WAR HORSE ... Will see it this week.

I am hoping to view "The Artist" when it becomes available on Blu Ray.  Have not made it to the store to purchase "Cowboys and Aliens",  but hope to soon.  My memory is slipping but would you happen to know if the final scene from "Indian Jones and the last Crusade" was in fact homage to the resurrection scene in DeMille's silent "King of Kings"?

I have yet to see the latter film, but it is on my bucket list.

I gotta say this before I sign off ....

It's beyond amazing what these computer guys can do to enhance what you see on a movie screen!

I realize that the vast majority of you GetBiggers have never had the opportunity to be on set while they are filming such movies as Promethius, Avatar, Final Destination 5 (?), Planet of the Apes, etc., but all you see is a lot of very professional people standing in and about a sound stage that is completely colored GREEN.

Everything that the film crew does NOT want to appear in the final footage is painted or covered in green, so that only the actors appear on the footage doing their thing is accordance with the script.

Then that footage is 'enhanced' by the computer geniuses who create the scenes in which the alien spacecrafts fly overhead or annihilate the non-leading actors... and all that other super-shit you see on screen.

I think it was "Letters from My Father" that was shot on a sound stage that was 50x50 feet square and the computer guys made it look like it was shot on Tarawa or one of the other Pacific Islands during WWII.

Top rated actors are necessary but I gotta give the real credit for the success of most films to those nerds who do that super impressive computer work.

I suddenly realized that the interwebs could provide the answer (YouTube) and nope.  It was not the Resurrection scene but rather the death on the cross.  Similar in the opening up of the earth to swallow the unbelievers or whathave you, but otherwise not the same. 

But given the 1927 timeframe, "King of Kings" was and looks to be magnificent.  There was even a two strip Technicolor version of the Resurrection up for viewing.  Given that it was DeMille and a Biblical epic, one would expect no less.   I wonder if Criterion makes a Blu Ray of this film as well as "The Sign of the Cross" (also by DeMille).

The space jockey is actually a member of this team.  I'm assuming it's the android of the group....

Somehow the android gets genetically altered by the experiments and becomes the large jockey.  He tries to fly the the ship off the planet while hosting an alien in him.  It bursts out...spacecraft crashes.  Jockey is dead.

SHOCK, Both Letters from Iwo Jima and  Flags of our Fathers were directed by Clint Eastwood and to the best of my knowledge both were shot on that small sound stage at Giant Studios. At least that's what one of the hi tech SFX crew members told me while we were doing some minor film work there about a year after each of them was released.

Giant Studios is located directly below the northern edge of Loyola University and it used to be the exact spot where Hughes Aircraft tested jet  engines for future commercial airlines.

In fact the studio itself used to house the Spruce Goose either before or after its location in Long Beach by the Queen Mary.

During my short time there, they were getting set up to film Avatar right next door and all the 'props' were in the process of being painted green.

Pretty soon, actors and actresses will not be required.  Once they can sythesize a voice to sound human, voice actors will be out of work.  They could license the image of Sean Connery and maker new Bond films starring that image.  John Wayne was once the most popular actor in the world, they could do the same with his image and voice.

If you create a character that the public responds well to you will never have to pay for human talent again and that "person" will never age, unless that is, you decided to make it so.

Special effects are now primarily (or close to it) CG.

The only delay are the legalities involved between all concerned including the stuios, the producers, directors., actors, and each and every union that has or will have a finger in the pie.

I worked on one set that was surrounded by a large number of very small cameras. Those cameras looked similar to those security cameras you see just about everywhere now-a-days.

An actor or the actor's representative would stand amid the center point of all these cameras and move as  was requested by the 'director'.

Those moves would be captured by each camera from every conceivable angle and transferred to a computer program and thereby 'manipulated' as predetermined by the script.

From then on the computer guys take over and add the finishing touches that make it look 'real'.

TinTin is sort of a leader in this field but not entirely because it still looks like you are watching a cartoon, but vast improvements are on the horizon.

In the DVD of the fourth "Lethal Weapon" film franchise, director Richard Donner (whose films I also enjoy, especiall the Donner Cut of "Superman II") discusses this issue on the supplemental audio channel.  If the major studios are not careful technology will soon allow them to be replaced with what I would term "garage movie moguls". 

I need to buy a Blu Ray of "Hooper".  For a period of time everyone wanted to see the new "Burt Reynolds movie".  Same with Arnold, Clint and Sly.  And of course, the Duke.  Man...

The ability to make a cg human which is 100% indistinguishable from a real person may(or may not)be here but they haven't demonstrated it yet IF it is currently possible. The apes in the latest POTA didn't look 100% real. Schwarzenegger in T4 didn't look 100% real.  They will eventually make 100% real looking humans/characters but it doesn't seem to be quite there yet. The fault could also be on the artist's implementation of the technology, in other words the way cg humans are currently sculpted/modeled, textured, lit, animated, etc.... may not be top notch even though, in theory, the software is capable of producing 100% real characters in the hands of the right artists.


 Below John Wayne and Steve McQueen are brought back to life in commercials though compositing which is a totally different method than creating characters from scratch with 3D programs.

The 3D rendering of today is very very advanced. The only problem is humans and animals, they can render almost anything photorealistly, but there still is something missing when rendering humans.
