A question about rubber dumbells/plates
« on: December 25, 2011, 06:43:47 PM »
Is it true they smell really bad? Of course there are rubber dumbells/plates in my gym but since it's a ventilated place I've never noticed this. Just wondering if having some of those dumbells at home could be annoying  ???

It depends on the grade. High end Eleiko, Ivanko, York, Etc..... stuff doesn't smell. The medium grade stuff like the York training bumpers and stuff like that might smell rubbery for a few weeks when new or if you really get close and sniff around. The really cheap Chinese stuff can have a rubber smell that lasts years/forever.

Most guys leave the stuff outside for a few days or wipe it down with fabreeze, that helps a bit.

Awesome info thanks  ;), but to be honest I have no idea about the quality of the plates I want to buy, but they look ok I guess. What can I do?  ???

It's not as hardcore as I would normally prefer but in a pinch it will have to do.

Those look ok, lots of guys have ones like that. If possible order a smaller plate and see if it has a smell. I think it will be there, but faint, not run out of the room bad.

Dont know about the smell, but my gym just replaced all the bells with new rubber ones with big white numbers on them.
I swear they are all 4-5 pounds lighter then they should be.
Or else all the old ones were to heavy. Not likely though.

I noticed the same thing when our gym switched to the rubber DBs.

When we still had the iron DBs, and I'd visit a gym that had rubber ones, I woud always lift more.  I just chalked it up to a mental boost from being in a different gym.  Also, the rubber DBs and plates definitely stink....some days worse than others.

Iron is expensive. Plates and dumbbells are getting lighter. Sometimes I think some of these gyms are buying light dumbbells on purpose.

A buddy of mine got rubber coated dumbbells for his house.  The place reeked for months. I can deal with it but it does stink.

What about rubber flooring? if you have it at home or any other non-ventilated room would also stink that bad?

i noticed the same thing with the rubber dbells, not so much the plates

they definatly feel lighter, weather its because there better balanced or they realy are lighter

X2 If I buy them I will weigh them at home, I also have iron plates so I will compare them, the rubber coated plates in my gym are def somewhat lighter  ;D

Downside to rubber plates, specifically the dumbells is when you get up to the 90's and beyond they are too wide and the size of the 150's

Gyms ae buying the rubber plates as well because then you cant fit as many on the bars

Bump

I bought some plates and they weigh and "feel" the same than the iron ones. Luckily they don't have any smell at all. I still think that the rubber coated dumbbells at my gym are lighter  ???

Looks pretty spot on to me....If anything thing the rubber ones are scaling out just a little bit heavier
