:D

I have a feeling you'll be right at home at Getbig!

Why, because he's a gimmick and posts behind a keyboard from 10,000miles away like you or is it another gimmick posting on here from "getbig2"?

Good shots Coach, but I find it odd when people photograph their food.

I go to restaurants and see people at lunch taking photos of their food to put on facebook and stuff and I just ask myself "WHY WHY WHY?!"

What kind of camera Coach?  He seems to be trying out all different techniques.  Action shots can be tough.  Sometimes ya gotta take dozens of shots to get the perfect one.

Years ago I had an Olympus manual SLR and took some great pictures.  I loved playing around with the different settings and lenses.  Ever since going smaller, automatic & digital, I can't seem to take a decent picture to save my life  :-\

Good shots Coach, but I find it odd when people photograph their food.

A friend of mine is a professional photographer. He's photographed food for ads in the past. He told me that I'd be amazed at what they do to food to make it look appetizing. Apparently it is painted and/or oiled up among other things. Obviously, one doesn't eat this food.

I'd say for someone just starting out those pictures are great. I've seen way worse.

I like that you seem to be encouraging him! Photography is a great gate-way in to art in general.

Only advice that I could give him/you is to not get obsessed with the camera gear itself... it's a very slippery slope. Before you know it, he'll try to justify getting a 2,5k dollar lens because of its "superior optics", "weatherproofing", "superior autofocus" and then next month the most expensive flash etc etc when really all that matters is what he does with the camera, not the camera itself.

I know this, because I've been there myself. Got caught up buying all kinds of fancy shit that really in the end didn't matter that much. With today's technology he can get really, really far without having to invest in super expensive shit.

Really the only ones that have a legit practicable reason to invest in the top-notch stuff are the professionals who have to abuse the living hell out of their systems every single day to make a living.

When you go camera shopping...get one that takes the old fashioned pentax/nikon lenses...LA is the center for the used photo equipment  markets...The picture with the bird needs  to be framed differently, and the focus should ignore the sand and focus on the bird...in otherwords he needs to learn to focus by hand with old fashioned lenses...

yeah, i saw on the discovery channel that they do tricks like spray paint clear on fruits, and/or drip them in oil. Or not cook the meat and spilt it so in "looks" like a beefier burger. :-\

Just echoing this advice.  I've taken some great shots out of a Nikon 150$ point and shoot.  Photography isn't about the gear you own, latest camera body or lenses etc, it's about lighting, composition, evoking thought and emotion by capturing the one moment in time.

For someone just starting out they are decent pictures.  Lighting and composition are probably the two most important aspects of photography so tell him to always take note of framing his shots and capturing light correctly.

Tell him to check out this site:  http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech.htm  Ken is a longtime photographer and has a ton of useful information for people starting out and even for those who have been shooting for a long time.
