Arnold had a dream to be really famous. He achieved that and via doing good things and some not so good. His affair with Mildred would have been a huge betrayal to Maria. You can imagine his staying at home and having fun while Maria did shopping, etc. Maria was humiliated by the indiscretion because now another woman had Arnold's child. This would be hard for any woman to forgive. Mildred and young Joe would have been included in many family functions and parties. In retrospect, that would have hurt Maria deeply.

Because of the affair the paparazzi were hanging around Arnold and tracked his every move. Not exactly what a guy needs to find new conquests. In other words, he was stuffed. Eventually the kids would have been the reason to think about getting back together. Single life for either of them was a compromise and both were way too famous to be left alone.

Arnold will promise to be good from now on and vow to himself to be more discrete in the future. I dare say Maria will have more say on who is hired to work in their home!

QFT. The Arnold constant nuthugging is really laughable. Everybody assumed Arnold was unfaithful as every man in his position is tempted to be and as long as it stayed hush that was fine.
