Senators warn new EPA rules would raise gas prices
By&guy

Senators from both sides of the aisle are warning that looming EPA regulations on gasoline could impose billions of dollars in additional costs on the industry and end up adding up to 25 cents to every gallon of gas.

The senators, in a letter this week to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, urged the agency to back off the yet-to-be-released regulations. Though the EPA has not yet issued any proposal, they claimed the agency is planning to call for a new requirement to reduce the sulfur content in gasoline.

Citing the nearly $3.40-a-gallon average price of gas and the state of the economy, the senators said "now is not the time for new regulations that will raise the price of fuel even further."

They said it would be "expensive" for companies to meet the sulfur targets and cited a study that found it could add up to $17 billion in industry-wide, up-front expenses, in addition to another $13 billion in annual operating costs.

This could in turn add between 12 and 25 cents to an average gallon of gasoline "depending on the stringency of the proposed rule," they wrote.

"If the EPA does not proceed carefully with its regulations, the nationwide price of fuel could increase to the further detriment of consumers and businesses," the senators warned.

The lawmakers on the letter were: Sens. James Inhofe, R-Okla.; Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska; John Barrasso, R-Wyo.; Mary Landrieu, D-La.; David Vitter, R-La.; and Mark Begich, D-Alaska.

The EPA did not comment on the senators' complaints.

Asked Friday for a response to the concerns, the EPA said: "EPA is still in the process of developing the proposal."

An EPA official said publicly in November that the agency was developing the so-called "Tier 3" standards proposal during a House subcommittee hearing.

Margo Oge, director of the EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality, told lawmakers that the proposal would help the country meet its "clean air goals."

"Motor vehicles and their fuel are an important source of compounds that form air pollution," she said.

Oge said reducing sulfur in gasoline would make emission control technology more effective, and "the end result would be cleaner air."

If the EPA formally issues the proposal, it would probably take more than a year for the agency to review public comments and finalize any plan.

A Senate Republican aide said the authority to tighten the sulfur standards comes from the Clean Air Act but noted that EPA has the discretion to either impose the standards or not.

The current sulfur standard is 30 parts per million in gasoline -- that's down from a prior standard of 300 parts per million. The new proposal could bring the standard down to 10 parts per million, according to the senators who wrote to Jackson

The aide said there was a "bigger benefit" when the standard dropped from 300 to 30 parts per million. But squeezing that down to 10 parts per million, the aide said, might not offer as much bang for the buck.

"They're extraordinarily expensive relative to the last round of sulfur reductions," the aide told FoxNews.com.

333 only blames Obama when gas prices go up

Gee....u fucking libs are morons. If Barry proposes legislation or had rules inserted via the EPA..that causes oil companies to spend more money to process oil...he's raised the price of gas. You president is a douchbag piece of shit. He spends every single day trying to undermine this country and then has the fucking nerve to say he's all about the middle class.

Oil companies are going to raise their prices whenever they feel like it.  They can make up any excuse or even give no excuse.  It doesn't matter what Obama, Congress, or anyone else does.

Remember that the majority of the oil that we use is foreign.  That's why I'm going off the grid and getting solar and wind energy hooked up in a few years...and you should too.

Unlikely.
OPEC nations will use any excuse they can to jack up prices.
The threatened sanctions on Iran and Irans threat about the Straight is cause for celebration for them, prices will skyrocket Im sure.

THEY GO UP!!!!   How fucking ignorant are you?   Would you have asked that same moronic question if instead Ghettobama proposed a .25 cent gas tax on top of what we already pay?

Swear, the more you leftists post on these topics, the easier it is to understand why we have Ghettobama as potus and this country is sliding towards collapse.

We shouldn't even be driving personal vehicles.  AT ALL.  The average vehicle weights north of 4000 pounds.  It transports an average of 300 pounds of people. This is easily one of the most inefficient things in society and in nature that leads to nothing good in the future.  Not to mention, the huge infrastructure that cars and light trucks demand and ever increasing costs to the average family in owning/maintaining one.  The pollution factor is an entirely different subject altogether.

Mandate the end of building new roads and highways.  Immediately.

INCREASE taxes on fuel.  It hurts, but it will force society as a whole to change to mass transit rapidly.

SCRAP the entire electric, hybrid, etcc.....vehicle concept.  They have proven to be just as harmful to the environment as your average gas or diesel vehicle.

Build electro-magnetic railway powered by nuclear and hydro power.  Clean.  No emissions.  Capable of speeds upwards of 300 mph.  The technology is there.

Transportation has not changed in 80 plus years.  It doesn't matter if your BWM can talk to you, make your latte, or a built-in rubber fleshlight......it is still an internal-combustion engine-equipped vehicle that demands too many resources in order to power it along.

Not sure if this is sarcasm or not,,... but...

HELL NO. The day they try and take my personal transportation is the same day I wind up in the grave. They can try and push mass transit on me all they want, they can go fuck themselves.
I dont like people much to begin with, and every time Ive used any sort of public transportation I wanted to kill everyone around me, there is no way in hell Im getting on any sort of mass transit system to go everywhere.

The government is not there to tell us how to live our lives, they cannot tell us what to drive or how to get where were going, and the fact Obama is trying to force us to adop his "ideas" on what is best for us to drive is really starting to piss me off.

Its not sarcasm.  Of course these changes would not occur overnight, but over an accepted period of time.  Your personal overweight car is soon to be a dinosaur....a relic of the past.  You may talk freedom all you want, and while the amount of freedom we actually have is contentious, it never trumps the overall greater good of society.  The strains on our environment from transportation, belching factories, and overpopulation is very real.

I can see personal cars becoming something akin to having a jet ski or an ATV to take to a track or something in the future, though.

Romney - in his own words -on video -  supporting cap and trade - on a GLOBAL scale.

So unless ron paul is the nominee (unlikely) - both candidates in the 2012 race support making big fun toys too expensive, if they bring too many emissions.

agreed, but for most voters, cap/trade becomes a non-issue now.  If obama and romney and the dems in senate & house, and dems in senate too probably - all support it - then what will stop it?  The GOP house that seems to be the only thing in the way - they have proven they'll kick up a stink, then repeatedly fold to seante repubs.

IMO, it's a non-issue now, like amnesty.  Just another thing where Obama = Romney in terms of policy.  Romney will push global cap/trade, accept it.

I believe they'll continue to do what they have done so far -

Make a big media stink aobut how they'll stop the spending, let it go to an urgent last minute, then take a 2% victory and let boehnner stand there and hand it all to senate/obama.

Either they're shills for obama like the repubs in senate, or they're the heroes who finally stop the spending.  But their 2 years in power is half-over and the spending has been reduced by a whopping 385 million.

That is solely due to the fear of being blamed like they were in 1995.   I disagree w that strategy.  I think they should shut the govt down entirely and blame Ghettobama and Reid for their treason.

I think boehner and McConnell are pofs pussies TBH.  They should shut the govt down tomorrow and we have an honest discussion about our finances.

the tea partiers have great numbers - they just need a better leader.  you put Rubio in as speaker of the house, and see what happens.

Ryan, Boehnner- they'll be in washington in 20 years, let's admit it.  They're lifers.  But most of these tea partiers aren't long-term politicians.  Something like 1/3 of them have never held office?    They won't have staying power.  They have the power to shut it down NOW.

Boehnner is handling them with kid gloves.  Letting them have their big 'stand' on national TV.  But what are their results?  Net 385 mil slashed from a budget that grows over a trillion per year?

IMO, boehnner is just weathering the political storm, letting them makr their noise, but knowing the spending wll continue at the end of the day.
