What made the government stop prohibition?
« on: January 16, 2012, 12:45:49 PM »
I know the biggest reason is probably because they wanted a piece of the pie, but why did they make alcohol illegal in the first place?  Did they deem alcohol too dangerous?  I think they should make most narcotics and steroids legal.  The government could tax it just like it does with gas.  I think it would make things less dangerous by killing the drug trade.  It would also be a form of population control with the weakest drug addicts offing themselves legally.  Alcohol and tobacco are legal, and contribute to the deaths of more innocent people (drunk drivers, 2nd hand smoke) then illegal drugs.

It's funny that when they started prohibition, the mob realized that they could make a fortune by illegally distributing it.  I think that was the biggest reason why the government stopped it.  Why do they let the illegal drug trade continue then?  Make it legal, tax it, and watch all the drug cartels and gang bangers dry up.

Alcohol is a nice means to control the population and their mindset - it being legal is a thing where pros outweigh the cons for government.
Many other drugs serve other purposes and are kept quasi illegal to partition society.

I understand what you are saying, but I thought I once read that the reason the Mayflower stopped in New England instead of sailing down to Virginia is that they ran out of beer on the ship.   :-\

(I don't know how true this is...I think I read it in one of those beer trivia books.)

i was in a class in college where the professor say it is because alcohol is a white man's drug. Where weed isn't as hurtful is illegal because it is a mexican drug.
