There's a story in the bible (can't remember where it is off-hand) where some people die in a disaster, and a bunch of people come before Jesus and ask him why he's not really upset about it. They ask him if this isn't tragic or not, why horrible things like this happen, etc. His response (and I'm paraphrasing) was that the real tragedy is when anyone dies and they are separated from God for eternity...you know, as in they didn't make it to heaven, they went to the bad place, as in literal hell. Of course, when one dies and is not separated from God this is a cause for celebration. His overall point, this life is short and fleeting, what happens or doesn't happen is of very little consequence, how long or short the life may be does not outweigh the condition of ones soul when it comes to eternity.

Of course, if someone doesn't believe in God then the above is meaningless to them. I feel sorry for these people, not pity but sorry they're missing out on the true peace life can bring when you recognize how insignificant your life is in the eyes of eternity and how much more there is than your own miniscule existence and the cost of ignoring such things. In my opinion, there is nothing on this earth more arrogant than a denial in God's existence.

well, wouldnt it be?  of course, if your not actually "called by god", and you just disaapear into nothingness and never exist or think or experience anything ever again, then that wouldnt be very good at all.. but then again, if that were the case, you wouldnt actually have been "called by god".. youd just be DEAD.

A student at private Christian college has died after she collapsed in class on her 21st birthday.
Ariane Noelle Patterson was in a religion class at Gardner-Webb University, in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, when she collapsed Tuesday afternoon - despite appearing to be perfectly healthy.
Just hours earlier, she had written on Twitter how grateful she was to celebrate her birthday and live another day, writing: ‘Thank you God for another year of life.’

Tragic death: Ariane Noelle Patterson died hours after tweeting she was glad to celebrate another year of life
University spokesman Noel Manning said Ms Patterson's cause of death is under investigation.
He said the school is investigating whether the student had previous health problems.
 

Last tweet: Ariane wrote 'Thank you God for a nother (sic) year of life' hours before she collapsed and died in class
Ms Patterson, described by her friends as a loving and caring person, was a senior majoring in religious studies and went to high school in Rutherford County.
The campus, he said, is in shock. The university is offering grief counselling to any student that wants it.
Mr Manning said that Ms Patterson ‘had this outrageous love for Christ and for people. I really got a sense for how much she was loved.’

In memoriam: Friends created a memorial page for their friend and classmate on Facebook

Mystery: The university is looking into her cause of death - they were unaware of any preexisting health problems
She had recently begun a media relations position for the campus ministry group, WSOC-TV reports.
Her friends and mourners took to social media, creating a Facebook memorial page. Those on Twitter said she was an ‘inspiring’ person and had a ‘beautiful soul.’
They included the hashtag: #PrayersforAriane.

In fairness, if death means your consciousness survives and is transported into a kind of paradise, it's a pretty good deal.  I like that unprovable notion much, much better than reincarnation (among other things).  If I "die" and live another live as some towel-head shouting Allahu Akbar who enjoys shooting his AK into the air at the drop of a hat, well, that isn't me, is it?  Cogito ergo sum.  As soon as "I" forget who I am in some other corporeal receptacle, I cease to exist just as sure as the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out.  

At least the Muslims, Christians and Jews think they'll retain some sense of self after they croak.  That's actually pragmatic, given that so many people are terrified of death (i.e., believe in afterlife, no matter how seemingly illogical, and it lets them focus on more important shit).  The reincarnation crowd deserves even more derision.

my train of thought as to determining that morality is based on logic, based on how you treat and feel about others..

ok let me try to reconstruct this for you..

 theres a couple different chains of thought going on here...

1

A) you could have been, I could have been, anyother person on the face of the earth. any other animal, any other living thing. it was only by chance that you are who you are, with 7 billion people and trillions living organisms, truly its a magnificent fact that you turned out to be who you are.

B) knowing that you could have been anyother living thing, you should treat all other living things with the same love and respect that you would want someone else to treat you with. "do unto others as you would have done unto yourself"

A) when feeling negative, when in pain, i can attempt to make myself feel better on my own but its always easier when someone else helps me to

C) as a community and as individuals we need to work to stay positive and to minimize eachothers pain because the more we work towards that goal the better EVERYONES life will be
