(CNN) -- Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, who has been treated for lung cancer and a broken pelvis, is in serious condition, a family spokesman said Saturday.

"Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications. His doctors have now characterized his status as serious," spokesman Dan McGinn said. "His family will have no comment on the situation and asks that their privacy be respected during this difficult time."

People getting all mad about paterno being dismissed... what he did allowed many kids to get raped for years. They seem to put him on a pedestal and worship him.

It's especially distressing to many because Paterno was considered one of the "good guys" whose character seemed beyond reproach.

In any sport, pro or amateur, money is involved I guess. I dont care what the motivation was, money or the gratification of one man's ego to win football games. Youre an idiot if youre defending paterno. Paterno is indirectly responsible for those children being abused. You shouldn't be defending him. He is no different than the person who covers up a murderer. Paterno is almost as sick as sandusky. Paterno knows he is molesting little boys, but allows him to continue being around young boys within that organization while turning a blind eye. That is sick and disgusting.
