The term "cracker" in Florida usage relates to the whip that cowboys used to "crack" cattle out of the swamps and scrub.

It was a tool used to deal with the environmental work hazards in northern florida.  Its secondary use (and a bastardized one at that) uses it to describe a native floridian (who would have had to use such a tool) as opposed to a 'snowbird' - a person who visits annually. 

I hope no snowbirds were offended as well.
