Chia Seeds for Fiber
« on: February 03, 2012, 12:11:27 PM »
So i usually buy VPX Fiberteq supplement to add to my protein shake. I feel the fiber has regulated my LDL & HDL cholesterol and keeps the pipes working good. I'm running a bit low and felt i needed to re-up, i usually pay about $15 for a pound of this stuff. So i decided to do some research.

I was looking online for alternative sources of fiber and i stumbled upon chia seeds, apparently these things are a good source fiber and efa's, they are tasteless and do not spoil and i paid $25 for 3lbs of organic chia. I checked amazon and could not find a bad review, everyone talks about these things like they are God.....

anyone ever try these things?

Yeah I drank them a few times ...not regularly so I can't comment on how good they really are. I like how they expand in water and they do seem to fill you up.

They are great. I've been using them for the past 5 years. I grind them up in a coffee grinder and add them to pretty much anything (lyquids, food). I buy them from ebay, it's about $7/lb. Here is who I buy it from:

Thx IceMan, i guess i paid a little too much, should've done a little more research. I too got them off ebay, i paid $23 for 3lbs bc they were organic. You think there is a difference, or all the same?

what do you like about them? I plan on using them as a source of fiber in my protein shakes.

In my opinion "organic" is better than "natural". With "natural" they still use some type of chemical while growing the plants. I tried both and organic is way better. The nutritional profile of chia seeds are amazing http://www.getchia.com/nutritional/chia-seeds-nutritional-information.aspx . I also use them mainly for fiber. I used to use flaxseeds before, but I find chia seeds to be better. It's also great for cutting weight. I take 1 tablespoon and drink a lot of water with it. They can hold 9-12 times their weight in water. So it keeps you full and hydrated throughout the day.

Mindspin is a big fan of chia seeds.  I think he's said he has them daily.

I keep forgetting to look for them/buy them when I'm at the store.
