Champ vs Challenger stats for UFC............

Heavyweight

Champion - Junior Dos Santos

Height = 193cm
Reach = 196cm

Cain Velasquez

Height = 185cm which equates to 96% of JDS' height.
Reach = 196cm which is identical to that of JDS, and yet he was dispatched with relative ease.

Alistair Overeem

Height = 195cm which gives him a 1% advantage over JDS.
Reach = 207cm which gives him a 6% advantage over JDS. This could very well be a telling matchup in our theoretical discussion as he has everything needed to win on paper.

Shane Carwin

Height = 188cm which equates to 97% of JDS' height.
Reach = 203cm which gives him a 4% advantage over JDS, however we saw that it made no impact on the outcome as JDS simply picked him apart at will.

Frank Mir

Height = 191cm which equates to 99% of JDS' height.
Reach = 201cm which gives him a 3% advantage over JDS.

Light Heavyweight

Champion - Jon Jones

Height = 193cm
Reach = 215cm

Quentin "Rampage" Jackson

Height = 185cm which equates to 96% of Bones' height.
Reach = 185cm which equates to only 86% of Bones' reach and actually gives Bones a 16% advantage (not 14 for those jumping the gun).

Lyoto Machida

Height = 185cm which equates to 96% of Bones' height.
Reach = 188cm which equates to only 87% of Bones' reach and actually gives Bones a 14% advantage.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua

Height = 185cm which equates to 96% of Bones' height.
Reach = 193cm which not only is the longest reach of the selected fighters but still equates to only 90% of Bones' reach, giving Bones an 11% advantage.

Then we have the coming defence against Rashad Evans:

Height = 180cm which equates to 93% of Bones' height.
Reach = 191cm which equates to only 89% of Bones' reach and actually gives Bones a 12% advantage.

His lack of height is made up for in reach but even he does not compare well statistically speaking. Bones simply doesnt have anyone that can match anything he has and could quite easily beat guys up without ever having a punch landed on him due to his outstanding reach. He has alot of room for manoeuvre in the exchanges without putting himself in danger.

Middleweight

Champion - Anderson Silva

Height = 188cm
Reach = 197cm

Chael Sonnen

Height = 185cm which equates to 98% of Andersons height.
Reach = 188cm which equates to 95% of Andersons, yet for whatever reason in their first fight Silva could do nothing to stop Sonnen handling him.

Vitor Belfort

Height = 183cm which equates to 97% of Andersons.
Reach = 188cm which equates to 95% of Andersons, and was clearly unable to get close enough to land any strikes of significance before being dispatched.

Michael Bisping

Height = 188cm which is identical to Andersons.
Reach = 193cm which equates to 98% of Andersons.

NOTE: I put him in due to the fact he is now in the shop window having "lost" so controversially to Sonnen. If Sonnen pulls out with injury i would fancy Bisping being chosen to fight for the title.

Mark Munoz

Height = 183cm which equates to 97% of Andersons height.
Reach = 180cm which equates to 91% of Andersons.

Chris Weidman

Height = 188cm which is identical to Andersons.
Reach = 193cm which equates to 98% of Andersons.

Chris is undeniably a contender and should be in with a shout of an eliminator in the next 12 - 18 months.

Welterweight

Champion - GSP

Height = 178cm
Reach = 193cm (wow........)

Carlos Condit

Height = 188cm which gives him a 6% advantage over GSP.
Reach = 193cm which is identical to that of GSP.

Jon Fitch

Height = 183cm which gives him a 3% advantage over GSP.
Reach = 188cm which equates to 97% of GSP's, quite telling in the fight itself as GSP cruised to a very comfortable win.

Josh Koscheck

Height = 178cm which is identical to GSP's.
Reach = 185cm which equates to 96% of GSP's. Also very telling in that GSP nearly ended his career by jabbing away freely and destroying his orbital bone.

Jake Ellenberger

Height = 178cm which is identical to GSP's.
Reach = 185cm which equates to 96% of GSP's.

Lightweight

Champion - Frankie Edgar

Height = 168cm
Reach = 173cm

Grey Maynard

Height = 173cm which equates to a 3% advantage over Frankie.
Reach = 178cm which equates to a 3% advantage over Frankie. Very telling in both fights as he had Frankie very badly hurt early on but seemed to be unable to find the right punch for the finish.

Ben Henderson

Height = 175cm which equates to a 4% advantage over Frankie.
Reach = 178cm which equates to a 3% advantage over Frankie.

Nate Diaz

Height = 183cm which gives him a massive 9% advantage over Frankie.
Reach = 193cm which gives him an even more ridiculous 12% advantage over Frankie.

and as it seems to be inevitable theyll meet, ill include Gilbert Melendez

Height = 175cm which gives him a 4% advantage over Frankie.
Reach = 180cm which also gives him a 4% advantage over Frankie.

He we have a man that we could argue that, as a fighter, seems to simply dispel the myth of physical advantages guaranteeing success and dominance. Physically Frankie is more suited to the 135's but dominates 20lbs above that.

To a point. A 6' 4" 245lb Arlovski was at an advantage over Fedor. There are more examples in the HW class im sure..

Arlovski was having his own way in that fight and would have won had he not decided it was OK to try a flying knee against the then #1 fighter in the world. Had he boxed the way he was and kept fedor at bay with his kicks and footwork he was winning by landslide.

so.. you are saying that if Fedor can KO bigger people than the LHWs should be able to as well? (aside from the woulda shoulda coulda)

I dont believe in size when fighting, everyone has a chance to a point. Im certain there are highly regarded LHW / HW fighters Anderson would destroy for example.

Stupid stats. Extremely stupid. If you could rationalize advantages like that, giant Silva and Bob Sapp would be unbeatable.

The stats are merely to show what each champion has in regards to his opponents, they hold no bearing on the outcome of the fight IMO. A fighter with a better skill set that makes the most of his opportunities inside the cage will win more often than not, this all began because most contributors believe Bones dominates because of his stats and not because of what he is physically able to do to people.
