Remember Willard's Infamous "Poor" Comment?
« on: February 13, 2012, 12:18:47 PM »
Remember Mitt Romney's infamous "poor" comment? If not, here it is again:

"I'm not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I'll fix it. I'm not concerned about the very rich; they're doing just fine. I'm concerned about the very heart of America, the 90-95% of Americans who right now are struggling."

Well, it got me thinking: Romney was actually being honest about Americans in general. We don't - none of us - spend much time thinking about the very poor.

But we should, because we have a real problem in this area, an economic, political and moral problem.

By Romney's calculations, if 95% of Americans fall in the middle class, then there must be less than 5% of Americans who qualify as poor.

Well, no.

The number from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the association of the world's developed economies, is actually 17.3%.

And how do we compare with other rich countries?

We rank 31st of the 34 countries that make up the OECD in terms of the percentage of our population that qualifies as poor. Of the 34 member states, only Mexico, Chile and Israel are worse off than we are. The UK (at 11%), Germany (8.9%) and France (7.2%) are all much lower. The OECD average is 11%.

In case you're wondering how the OECD defines poverty, it calculates the number as the percentage of people who earn less than half of the country's median wage. It's an easy way to compare data across countries.

Say what you will about Romney, he is our next president. He's going to run the AIDS infected looking, Alfred E. Neuman eared, burnt up little french fry of a Muslim out of the White House. The wanna-be-somebody Benny can cut and paste his leftist articles with their graphs, charts and statistics all he wants. He hasn't the faintest idea what he's reading and pasting, but he sure likes to annoy the so called Coach.

So fear not. The Negro has had his day to prove himself, and he has failed. The White House will be back in white hands soon.

And the majority of those very poor he's talking about have never seen the inside of a voting booth. I don't see anything wrong with what he said but probably wasn't the smartest comment for a trained politician.

i think romney is this year's john kerry... a rich lame guy who wants his chance, but just won't connect with people.

After obama wins another 4 years, it'll be Jeb getting 8 years in office.  Then, I dunno, maybe chelsea clinton will be old enough?

Well, Romney has Kerry on looks - that's a given. I guess we'll have to see if he get's 'fastboated' from some quarter.

The only thing that is full retard is having an asshole like obama blame ATM machines for job losses and claim that adding trillions in debt is the way out of debt.

I voted for Obama in 2008 and was suprised. He was great on defense policy but disapointed me on economic/domestic stuff.
I am a registered democrat but if Romeny gets the GOP nod he may get my vote next NOV

A key indicator of the level of health in a country is its infant mortality rate; that's when a child dies within the first year of life.

We're at about six deaths for every 1,000 live births. The UK, Australia, Germany, France and Japan all fare much better. Japan's rate is less than half ours. This is simply because many mothers don't have access to prenatal care. Malnutrition and poor childhood health care set in motion a lifetime of poor health - and huge costs to the system.

On indicator after indicator, the U.S. compares badly with other rich nations on not only how impoverished it is but on the facilities and opportunities it is giving the poor. That's why social mobility has stalled in America.

Mitt, you need to worry about the very poor. We all do.

obama has moved from 51% chance of re-election to 60% in the last 3 weeks.  www.intrade.com

that's what the rest of the world is BETTING upon.  Not political day to day stuff here.  That's putting their money where their mouth is.

I'd love to see Jeb/christie take over at the convention, appoint Ron paul as sec of the fed, and beat obama.  But outside of that, I'm not sure a romney/santorum ticket is really going to get  repubs to vote.  And Romney's 19 point swing with independents since november... going from up 10 over obama to down 9 points... that's awful.  people just don't like the dude.

What would the G&O board resemble without more grade-A foolishness like this?

I guess it never dawned on some folks that the USA has almost as many people as ALL OF THOSE OTHER NATIONS COMBINED!! And, since several of those other nations happen to have extremely LOW birthrates (i.e. Japan has HALF our birthrate; France, about 60%), it would follow that their infant mortality level would also be low.

Also lost on Benny is the fact that the UK and Germany TRIED the very same CRAP that Obama wants to impose on this country, with disastrous results.

But, as with far too many liberals, folks like Benny expect other people to foot the bill to either kill (in the womb) or care for the babies that they foolishly conceive, due to their urge to merge without factoring in the responsibility part.

Of course, liberals like Obama LOVE caring for the poor......as long as they don't have to spend THEIR OWN MONEY to do it.
