He was completely right..
He tried every possible way to not get into a physical altercation with those two beasts. He took a few hits from them, ignored their insults and even ran away from them. Once they cornered him, he had no choice but to attack or possibly suffer from serious bodily harm. Like any cornered animal, he went from logical thinking to pure rage and instinct with a serious beating resulting. This is why all charges against him were dropped.
In the words of Mike Katz, "Its like a dog. You know you can kick a dog so long and it'll do two things. It's either going to roll over and die, or it's going to bite you and attack you."
