Russia is a fucked up country, esp since the fall of communism. The extreme income differences, abuse of alcohol, corruption, crime, nuclear disasters & worse economy are prime examples of this. On the other hand this country is full of intellectuals, scientists, artists, etc, but most of them have no future in this destroyed society, very sad.

Russia as a country has currently practically no foreign debt. Rare these days.
That has been Putin's policy; If you owe to someone, you are his slave.
Look at USA: They must kiss China's ass because of their debt. Yes, repair is slower without debt but Putin chose it because it keeps the country independent.

You know how big Russian Federation is ? If it was a house, you could place USA in the living-room. Yes, shitloads of problems. The corruption being the most urgent.
There have been pretty epic estimates on how much of the money federal government allocates on different purposes, goes to pockets of regional leaders.
