Layne Norton has preached many times how eating 6 meals a day is a total myth!

Personally I eat 4 food meals a day and 3 protein shakes (and almonds at night) meals a day!  Just my preference!

The phrase 6 "meals" is the only problem.  Every single good amateur or pro bodybuilder eats/consume calories 5 - 7 times per day. No exceptions. Just as Big A has stated.

Eating 6 meals a day is easy. Iam up at 3:45 so breakfast, then 3 meals at work (12 hour shift) then supper at 6 then eat again around 9. I eat because iam hungry plus gh really increases my appetite.

If your body needs 3000kcal that day and you eat 2500 over 3 meals or 2500 over 5 meals there still is 500 short either way and you will lose weight. Personally I prefare to eat little and often because I am always hungry unless I eat my self sick which can be a much as 3000kcals + in a sitting. When I eat big meals im sluggish and bloated.
I love food, I could sit their picking at food all day and never feel full. Eat what feels best for you

I dont see how anyone with a job, a life, and a family can find time eating 6 meals a day without it totally taking control of your life.

I just went out and ran some errands right now. I was gone for four hours. I ate about an hour before I left and I'll probably make some dinner in an hour or so. So that'll be a good 6 hours between meals. Im not hungry at all.

Ill have 4 meals today. Which I usually end up having. I usually have 2 in the earlier part of the day and 2 later in the day with one being a before bed snack more so then a meal.

6 meals........I just dont see how u guys do it.

Your not dedicated enough. 6 meals is nothing, try 7-8.  Its all about planning each day on the forehand.

on a day in and day out basis I seem to do about 4 meals per day (not counting  pre/peri workout nutrition as a meal)

  The size of meals matters as much as the number. Catabolism of muscle tissue only starts after two things happen:

  1. Glucose and triglycerides from your last meal are not longer entering your bloodstream and...

  2. Liver and part of muscle glycogen stores are depleted.

  All of this takes somewhere between 10 to as much as 50 hours depending on the amount of calories of your last meal to the size of your liver and muscle glycogen stored.

  A large meal furnishes more calories and takes longer to digest, thus delays catabolism longer. Once no more glucose an triclycerides are entering your bloodstream from your last meal, your body starts using the glycogen stored in your liver. Once this is gone, it starts to burn muscle glycogen. Muscle glycogen is never completely used because you need it for movement during a fast.

  After that, muscle protein starts getting chewed up and taken to the liver to be converted into glucose via gluconeogenesis. The body chews up muscle protein first because this decreases metabolism. The body is programmed to survive, so it decreases muscle mass to decrease overall caloric needs. Muscle is maintained only as needed for movement. Then, when the body cannot use essential muscle, it takes the fat stored in fat cells to the liver where it is broken into short-chain glycerides and turned into glucose to furnish the body with energy. So this is the order:

  1. Calories from meal...

  2. Calories from liver and muscle glycogen..

  3. Muscle protein...

  4. Fat from fat cells...

  Fat is the last to go. This is why weight training exercise is so essential. If you tell your body you need the muscle, it will spare it and go straight to bodyfat and not chew your muscles when you are in a caloric deficit and your live glycogen store is depleted. Look at marathoners. They have little fat but also little muscle. All that exercise puts them in a caloric deficit, and the body uses all their bodyfat for energy, but also their muscle tissue except for the quads and calves which they need for running.

think people saying they need 6 meals cause they are hungry so much is because of habit. I used to eat 6 times a day and was still hungry all the time. Then i started skipping breakfast and tried fasting all day. hunger was pretty much gone. but i don't like feeling like i always have to eat at the same time period. so now i just eat whenever, nearly always skip breakfast as I'm far more concerned about curing my thirst than eating. always so thirsty in the morning and my stomach is sensitive to food early on.

I normally just have some egg whites and pineapple then go train. screw eating 6 times a day 'on the clock'. Seems so pointless. I can understand if you really struggle to eat alot of calories in one sitting but people who are eating to cut on say 2000 calories a day, if u split that into 6 meals thats like what, just over 300 calories per meal? Thats boring! would much rather eat about 600 calories a meal and enjoy it, or even 1000 calories for dinner and the rest earlier on which is what i tend to do now. Personal preference I guess. But I do agree that meal frequency is the least of peoples concerns for body comp.

3-5 is ideal IMO when dieting.

3 meals and 3 shakes for me @ the mo, but I'm only taking in 3000 Kcal...

I could imagine eating 5000 + calories being tough in the off season though, it will be easier to get it all in with more frequent smaller meals (less bloated) or grazing all day... than trying to stuff your face with 2-3 massive meals.

I agree with SMM.  Size of the meal counts a lot.

This is why there are so many permabulkers.  They are getting too many calores.

So you just took an article from elephantjournal which im pretty sure meant for the natural and normal population and than you give the example of Mr.Olympia which is the top of the extreme?

2 meals per day here, sitting at 250lbs ~15% bodyfat and no hormones in my system for weeks.
I thought you was on tren trying to get into the singles, what happened?

I only eat when my body feels hungry, which is a lot more on stims and gear. If you force feed your self you just get bloated and fat.

The last three months ive done a 360 on when and how much i eat.

This has worked for ME.

3 Eggs, almonds, granola bar, coffee

two turkey bugers, apple

THEN I EAT WHATEVER THE FUCK I WANT FOR DINNER.

Hamburger chips or tukey sangwhich chips or monster salad (meat, croutons, hard boiled eggs)

So this is only three meals a day. Look the best I ever have eating this way.
