Banning the word "Retarded"?

The word retard and retarded is already pretty much "banned" in an office environment, what they want to tell people that they are not allowed to use this word in public and might be sued if they do so?

one of my friends has a brother who is severely mentally handicapped. he thinks using the word is offensive. weve discussed it before. im not so sure i agree. he tried comparing the useage of the word "gay" with the word. but when some one says something is gay, they are correlating homosexualness with negativity. whereas when someone says something is retarded, yes its correlated with a negative, but thats the definition of the word retarded to begin with. there is no way to say retarded without it meaning something to the extent of less than, wrong with, negative.. etc.  so i dont really agree with the idea that using the term is offense. but i can understand someone feeling that way and so i avoid using it.

The argument isn't whether it's offensive, it probably is, but rather should the word or any other word be banned.

If people would donate some time to working with mentally handicapped kids in their community (i.e. coaching special needs little league, etc), they would see how hard these kids try to do the same things every kid wants to do. To equate mental retardation with being stupid is demeaning and insulting. The people using the word retarded as an insult are usually the ones with the low IQ.
