yes but maradona not only carried a team (napoli), but he carried a country in the '86 world cup.

the maradona and pele eras were fucking brutal too, when compared to todays. christ, they've almost removed tackling from the game today  ::)

Napoli and Argentina had a fair few world class players, him carrying them is a myth.

Agree about the second part though.

Messi is undoubtedly gifted, the best natural talent since ronaldinho

Cristiano is the most complete player atm

Ibra also does the unbelievable at times

The last 10 or 12 yrs have produced some amazing talent. Fans of the sport are witnessing some of the best football in history IMO

mind you, messi can more than cement his place in history if he and argentina can win the wc in brazil. every south american and spanish/portuguese speaking country is gonna be up for this one.

yes he did carry club and country

Yes there is more protection from refs

But,

The game is much faster, defenders and full backs are better, the holding defensive mid position did not really exist then as it does now
Maradonna innovated a lot, and did what was then unseen and seemed impossible, but the talent pool has grown the game has evolved, lots of talent out there
Add in fixture congestion with club leagues, cups, european games, internationals and friendlies...

Maradonna was hanging by a thread towards the end, loaded up with cortisone and other drugs to get through games, plus ped's , and his rec habits

The modern game has changed, real athletes nowadays, lamps, cristiano, ibra, kaka, nani...

Maradona won the 1986 World Cup almost single-handedly and took Argentina to the final four years later. He also took  one of the  the worst Italian team ( Napoli ) to its only two Italian titles .
Messi is a great player but he plays in the best teamin the world , the base of the Spanish national team (world champions ) Barcelona with or without Messi still one of the best team in the world.
Playing for  the Argentina National team  Messi is just a good player

Watch and learn bitches.

precisely why its so hard to choose between eras. still, players like pele, maradona would still have dominated and been even better in todays game.

Pretty sure Napoli were top 5 for a few seasons before Diego joined and they had a few world class players.

Argentina were about the same level they are now.

Still the best i have seen regardless.

napoli were bankrupt, but came into money with new prez, like they did again recently after having been relegated to lower leagues

They also had zola, alemao, careca, ferraro

The italian league is a joke though, they already decided who's gona win the next 2

Fucking rossi gets release from jail to help italy win 82 WC after going to jail for matc fixing

No way. Injured past prime Baresi. Nothing near this level nowadays. The defending in italy in the 80's was scary good.

nesta is the best defender ever

I'm not a milan fan, but for many yrs I've also admired mexes at roma, the frenchman, he's past his prime now, as is nesta

If nesta and mexes had played together at their prime, say in front of buffon, it wouldve been best defense ever

Maradona =  Ronaldinho and Messi in one player .

You could be right, atm messi is young and has time on his side, but not at maradonna level at all yet

But in the fantasy trick stuff, the flamboyant, arrogant magic, ronaldinho had maradonna you gotta admit

I'm a fan of footbal, to me figo, rui costa, eusebio and pele were amazing, I also admire cristiano and R9, hate ibra but he's good, and maradona was a god of his day

no mate.. although i've seen the clips from when he was a kid..

i'll give that a watch later.

it'll never happen. i'd like to see messi play over here. just like *choke* ronaldo has dominated both leagues. i'd like to see messi do the same.

not that i'm saying he couldn't, haha.
