Most Americans back 'Buffett tax': Reuters/Ipsos
By Kevin Drawbaugh

(Reuters) - Nearly two-thirds of Americans support imposing a minimum tax rate of 30 percent on those who earn $1 million or more a year, according to Reuters/Ipsos poll results released on Tuesday.

The poll showed that 64 percent of those surveyed favored a "Buffett tax" as proposed by the Obama administration and named for multibillionaire investor Warren Buffett, who backs it.

The Sage of Omaha, as Buffett is sometimes known, has been a vocal advocate of higher taxes on the wealthy. Obama called for the new tax in his State of the Union speech in January.

Legislation has been filed by Democrats in Congress to enact the tax into law, but it was widely expected to languish this year with the U.S. House of Representatives under the control of Republicans who are opposed to tax increases of any kind.

The poll said that support for the Buffett tax was strongest among Democrats, at 76 percent, but also significant among Republicans, with 49 percent of them viewing it favorably.

"There is a tolerance with the American public for conversations about tax increases or changing the tax code in some way," Ipsos research director Chris Jackson said.

In a related issue, the poll said that 57 percent of Americans would support eliminating the tax deduction for mortgage interest if it resulted in a lower overall tax rate.

Once again, Democrats were more supportive, at 63 percent, while Republicans were less so, with 52 percent in support.

"People talk about taxes as if you even mention it, you're going to get run out of town on a rail, but these polling numbers indicate that Americans are actually interested in some taxes, particularly ones they think will not affect them."

The U.S. government's budget deficit is expected to swell to $1.17 trillion in the 2012 fiscal year ending in September, with some landmark decisions on tax and spending policy awaiting Congress after the November elections.

The U.S. tax code has not been overhauled in 25 years. Since then it has become riddled with deductions, exemptions and other special provisions - such as the mortgage interest deduction - that deprive the government of more than $1 trillion a year.

Most budget experts agree that addressing the deficit situation will require cuts in spending and tax changes.

The March 8-11 telephone poll surveyed 1,084 adults nationwide and has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points, Ipsos said.

GOOD POST!!!!  Tax the rich till they have less than 1 million in the bank, all of them!!!!  Giving tax cuts did nothing but make the rich richer.  Rich people are greedy SOB's for the most part, you have to make them by taxation give their money that they owe to the people to the gov't who can redistribute it out.

Oh wow! Really?! I bet they do!

And guess how much Buffet himself would pay under the new tax? Just as much as he does now! WOW!

Also, raise taxes means more money will be spent, that's it and that's all.

So...raising the effective tax rate would generate NO additional revenues?

What you see is that there was a huge revenue increase during the Clinton years. There was also the much-touted revenue surge of the later Bush years, but this followed a spectacular revenue plunge earlier.

Earn $1,000,000, and you have to give $300,000 of it back to the government.

$300,000 will buy lots of birth control for these dirty whores....  ::)

That's great....

Taxes were raised first by Bush, Clinton tax revenues increased because of another tax hike as well. In the end, the revenues were increased because of a growing economy. The tax increases accounted and account for a fraction of revenues, esp. during that period. You need to transpose GDP growth/employment levels with that chart. The "Bush Tax Cuts" decreased revenues at first but as the graph shows they reached record highs shortly there after. Of course this talk is all mumbo jumbo b/c both economies were built on printed money, low interest rates and GIANT credit/debt/RE/CDS bubbles.

Also, raising taxes never gets the govt. the revenue they project, and cutting taxes never generates the revenue or whatnot that the government projects. Actually, nothing the govt. projects ever comes to fruition.

And what I meant in my original post was that Buffet already pays far below the official rate because his "wealth" is based on capital gains and unrealized losses + charitable donations etc. You can raise the top rate to 100% and he would still pay the same as he does today.

Funny how he is a total lap dog and mouthpiece for this Admin. and just loves to advocate for new taxes that won't effect him or his buddies in the slightest. Plus he said he is going to donate his money to the Gates Foundation when he passes thus skirting the Estate Tax as well.....that Buffet, one of the biggest tax dodgers in history, doesn't want to pay his fair share!

I don't try and scapegoat because it's intellectually lazy. If you are going to look at the situation do yourself the favor and look at the whole thing. Plus I didn't "defend" anyone, I was just trying to inform ignorance.

The tax code is an efficient mess which discourages saving and prudent financial thinking, you aren't going to solve it by scapegoating "rich folks".
