Police are investigating a confrontation at the town skate park between an off-duty Trumbull police officer and a large group of teen skateboarders Thursday evening.

The incident, triggered after the officer warned a teen-age driver to stop doing "donuts" in the parking lot, has produced no immediate arrests. But the confrontation remains under investigation as police study a video of the incident.

Police Sgt. Suzanne Lussier said Friday that police received a call shortly before 5:30 p.m. Thursday reporting that a man and several teenagers were involved in an altercation at the skate park on the South Benson Marina property.

The off-duty officer, Ed Targowksi, who had come to the park with his young son, said that when he saw a teenage driver executing donuts with his car -- spinning his wheels to create circular skid marks -- he approached the driver and identified himself as a police officer. He said he told the driver to shut off the car and give him the keys. The driver did not comply, so Targowski said he reached in, turned off the ignition and took the keys.

At that point, police said, the teen got out of his car and was joined by about a half-dozen friends, surrounding the officer and an altercation ensued.

Targowksi, however, was able to get to his car and produced his police badge, prompting most of the teens to leave the scene.

"Statements are being taken and people are being interviewed," Lussier said.

Anybody who does donuts in their car is a dickhead in need of a beatdown - I hate these teen punks who think that a car is their personal toy thing that they can use to annoy and harass good people.  If I had a dollar for everytime i heard some Young Punk do a burnout  around the corner out the front of my house I would be a rich man.  It happens about two or three times a night, along with the compulsory doof doof bass music, as these dickheads believe it's not offensive and life threatening enough to drive like a maniac, they also want to drive you insane with their simulated heart attack music.  Personally, as someone who has driven for a living before, these people are dangerous and a good beatdon might sort them out a little!

I have never been called a "little man", so that is refreshing.  I actually get tired of people commenting on my size and assuming I am about to beat the sh!t out of them!  Anyway, tolerance of dangerous driving isn't too be tolerated, and if I could get a chance to beatdown one of these punks without getting caught I would.  Just Like Bas, i look forward to those golden opportunities.  The key for me though is not to get caught, best to just let the police beat them down!

Yes no doubt. Any adult was an authority figure to be respected for the most part. Any of my uncles or friends of my father had free reign to backhand my little punkass if I acted a fool. He took another persons KEYS while NOT on duty... Even on duty, the person would have to be arrested and the car impounded for something like "RECKLESS DRIVING".

ALSO, if this kid is a teen and he is NOT writing him a traffic summons, he is REQUIRED to speak to the kids parents before questioning the kid.

The biggest problem is that the teen doesn't know what's going on.

I was raised strict, hence the reason the older rebel!  I actually did a week long  defensive driving course when I was 16, it was pretty full on about safety and being aware that your operating a dangerous vehicle etc etc..  Also had plenty of professional lessons and I can honestly say i never did burnouts, donuts or the like - I owned motorcycles as well, and about the worst I did was open the throttle on long stretches of highway!  The first car I owned, I had to save every penny for it, and it was a shitbox, probably would have fallen apart if I tried anything crazy in it!  So no, I never did that shit!  Too many stories where people get killed from that shit!  A lady I once knew killed her two close friends acting like a hoon, I followed her story for years and she was lucky to not go to jail for a long time, the whole thing was completely unavoidable and tragic!  It fucked up about a dozen families lives!

Probably was an immediate hazard and it was cool the off duty cop made an attempt to stop it. Playing monday morning quarterback I would hazard a guess that he used the wrong approach. I've dealt with similar things over the years and USUALLY if you approach it with a "Hey, do me a favor and knock that off, there are kids around" is enough. If he came across as an overbearing prick it tends to ruffle feathers. At that point if you don't have your shit together, know how to handle a confrontation with confidence and competence it can degrade into what you see on the film.
Personally, if I saw a kid doing donuts in a parking lot with kids around I would approach him and do the "Hey, cool car, but do me a favor and tone it down, you don't want to accidently hurt someone" If he gave me attitude at that point and continued I'd whip out my super fancy cell phone and pretend to be calling 911 to report it. 9 times out of 10 that's all it takes. At no time would I take his car keys

once i was driving in my car..... without seatbelt.... traffic was slow.....
the car next to me had a couple.... he was driving .... he starts staring at me.... so i am like , WAZZUP??
he start pulling out his wallet.... and then his Police id.... so i am like , yes good for you.... ??
he start pointing at my seatbelt....
i started laughing at him, pulled down my window ....What are you going to do man, give me a ticket??? told him to fuck off, and come back when he is in uniform and ON DUTY! 
Dumbass did not say a word.... turned beetred... and his woman could not hide the fact she was laughing....and traffic being slow, he was next to me for about 10 minutes... hahahaha.... was an epic fail on his part....

Had a similar situation... I was late for work... I was rolling down some side streets and back roads.

This car behind me is keeping up... It's just an average car... Some sort of Dodge (This was in 1998 or something)

I pull up to a light and I look over it's an off duty cop (Most likely a rookie, as in this area, only rookie's don't get take home vehicles) wearing his uniform going to work. (To pick up his road cruiser no doubt)

He points at me, then points to the ground (I assume that meant to slow down)

I just laughed at him and made my left turn with the light turned green... I bet he spent all day looking for me while I was at work.
