Yes...better than the Godfather series...most don't like it because there is less overt violence...but it is a better movie.

Fredo suffered brain damage from his illness as a baby. Pneumonia. Very high fever. Brain damage.

But Fredo was working with Roth to kill Michael.

Getting passed over upset Fredo.

"They said you were being tough on the negotiations." - Fredo

Fredo is referring to the Cuba casino deal. Two million dollar buy-in. Michael knows that the revolution is going to succeed. Castro in. Batista out.

"They said that there was going to be something at the end of this for me." - Fredo

"I've always taken care of you." - Michael

"Taken care of me? You're my younger brother and you're taking care of me? I'm the older brother and I was passed over. It's not the way I wanted it! I can do things. I'm smart. Not like everybody says. Not dumb. I'm smart and I want respect!" - Fredo

As dumb as he was, Fredo had to know the information Johnny Olla was asking about the compound was going to lead to an assassination attempt on Michael.

I feel sorry for his what happened to him when he was a baby. However, he had to know they were going to bump off Michael. And if he didn't, he's not just slow. He's a super retard.

Don't blame Michael for getting the job done.

I disagree..you don't get the job done on your own brother....he could have exiled him...also Michael's own son was really close to Fredo....and also if you paid attention, during the scene when Michael's wife admits to Michael that she had an abortion, it is hinted that Michael's own children are suffering psychologically and seeing a psychiatrist as well

There is no scene where it is said that Anthony is seeing a psychiatrist.

None.

It is not even hinted at.

All Kay says is "look at your son."

Michael says "Anthony's fine."

I have the five disc DVD set and the very rare fan assembled 588 minute set of the three films.

I know them all pretty much verbatim.

---------------------------------------------------

Fredo was involved in a plot to kill Michael. How much he knew is debatable.

"You guys lied to me. Don't call me again." - Fredo, in bed, and on the phone after the Michael assassination attempt.

It was Johnny Olla calling him.

Having said that, he still deserved to die. If one of my brothers tried to kill me and failed, I would most definitely kill him without hesitation.

Michael does the right thing in waiting for his mother to die first.

If Fredo had any sense of honor, or of manhood, he would have killed himself like Frankie "Five Angels" Pentangeli did.

There is a cause involved, Mike is the head of an Empire that will eventually be a billion dollar empire, thousands rely on his decisions, and that being the case he must make unbiased decisions to be worthy of leadership., he cannot view his brother's actions as "his brothers actions,he must view them as someone's actions against the cause, so in order for things not to crumble in the future the right decision must be made, resulting in a stable foundation of his Empire with the strongest of all as the leader, Had to be done

Also loved the part in Godfather One where Sonny sees that his sister was beat up by her husband and he gets so angry he bites his own hand,,,then he goes out in the street and absolutely destroys his brother in law...I love the part also when the brother-law was trying to hold on to some bars and sonny bit his hand so he would let go.....classic street fight...
Sonny was a crazy mother-fucker!!!!....however his temper was his downfall in the end
I loved it when he grabbed the garbage can and smashes him.    ;D

Sorry. Wrong. This is a tired old argument that a lot of cineastes roll out on occasion for some kind of film 'credibility.' The Conversation is a fine film, and Hackman is superb, but it is not better than The Godfather, or Two. Those two will admired, watched, and cited as long as cinema stays in a recognizable format.

very good point..well taken...but Michael basically lost all of his humanity there.....killing your brother is always over the top...which is why the Cain and Abel story in the bible is of such prominence....Michael totally lost his soul once that deed was done...I do not think his father, the Don, would have approved of it..Michael's father was a thinker..Sonny was crazy and tempermental....Fredo was an idiot and probably not cut out for being a mobster....Michael should have been better than all of them...it made no sense to kill your half-retarded brother..plus he alienated his other "brother" Tom.

so did I..funny as heck and shows how crazy Sonny was....looking at that scene with a different spin, I wonder if THAT was a sort of dry run.....seeing if Sonny would come if the Brother-in -Law beat up the sister...which then set up the later assassination....because they knew Sonny would come again..OR did they notice that sonny came the first time so they set him up the second time....

It's because he went batshit in public instead of handling it quietly.  It became public knowledge that smacking the sis around was Sonny's hotbutton and they made him jump like a marionette with it.

very good points as well, Cain and Able is not the same scenario, although when someone kills there brother Cain and Able come to mind, however there are many stories in the Bible where someone kills their brother, the one I find closes to this scenario is when King Solomon kills his brother after he inherits the throne from his Father "King David"
