What Testosterone Implants are used for
Testosterone Implants are used in hormone replacement therapy in men. Testosterone is a natural male hormone, known as an androgen, which controls normal sexual development in men.
Testosterone is essential for the development and maintenance of the male sex organs as well as other male characteristics such as deep voice, increased muscle strength, hair growth etc.
Your doctor may prescribe Testosterone Implants for other reasons. Ask your doctor if you have any questions about why Testosterone Implants have been prescribed for you.

Before you use Testosterone Implants
When you must not be given it
Do not use Testosterone Implants if you have or are suspected of having a tumour of the prostate or breasts. You also should have had an examination by your physician to exclude any abnormalities of the male sex organs.
Pregnancy: Testosterone Implants are not approved for use in women.
Do not use this product if it has passed the expiry, use-by date or if the ampoule is damaged.
Before you are given it:
You must tell your doctor if you have or have ever had:
* high blood pressure
* heart problems
* high calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcaemia )
* high calcium levels in the urine (hypercalciuria)
* kidney disorder
* epilepsy or migraine (or a history of these conditions)
Taking other medicines may influence the effect of Testosterone Implants or Testosterone Implants may affect other medication. Testosterone Implants may change glucose tolerance and decrease the need in diabetic patients for insulin or other antidiabetic drugs.
You must tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using anticoagulants or barbiturates.
Using Testosterone Implants
How much
The dose is chosen by the doctor. A dose of 100-600 mg implant is usually given, but this depends on each individual.
Dosage may be adjusted by your doctor in response to your individual requirements.
How the implant is inserted
Testosterone Implants are inserted under the skin into the lower abdominal wall or buttock by your doctor. You are usually given a local anaesthetic in this area before the implant is inserted and the small cut made is dressed with a bandage afterwards. The implant usually lasts for 4-5 months. These implants should only be given by a doctor or a nurse.
While you are using Testosterone Implants
Things to be careful of
Be careful operating or driving machinery until you know how Testosterone implants affects you. It may cause dizziness or light-headedness in some people, shortly after administration.
Side Effects of Testosterone Implants
All medicines can have side-effects. Sometimes they are serious, most of the time they are not. You may need medical treatment if you get some of the side effects.
Testosterone Implants are generally well tolerated, however some unwanted side effects that may occur include
* retention of salt and water
* swelling,
* increased number of blood vessels in the skin,
* high calcium levels in the blood
* change in blood sugar levels,
* bruising of implant insertion area and extrusion of implants(s).
The following side-effects have also been associated with male hormone therapy in general:
* increased cholesterol levels;
* prolonged painful erections and other signs of excessive sexual stimulation;
* early sexual development and early stopping of bone growth in immature boys;
* reduced fertility and decreased ejaculation volumes;
* male breast enlargement;
* nausea, pimples (acne) rash, flushing of the skin;
* yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
* dizziness, headache.
Tell your doctor if you have any of these side-effects or others and they worry you.
If someone has swallowed an implant, it is not a medical emergency. However, you should consult a doctor.
After Using Testosterone Implants
Storage
It is unlikely that you will need to store Testosterone Implants at home. However if required, keep Testosterone Implants in the original box in a safe place out of reach of children. A locked cupboard at least 1.5 metres above the ground isa good place to store medicines. The storage conditions are given on the box. Store in a cool dark place. The expiry date is printed on the label after 'exp.'. Do not use after this date.
Disposal
Return any unused medicine to your pharmacist.
Product Description
What it looks like
Each pack contains one clear glass ampoule with a pale yellow cylinder approx. 4.5 mm in diameter. The 100mg and 200mg implants are approximately 6mm and 12mm in length respectively. These pellets contain 100 or 200 mg of testosterone. There are no other ingredients in the pellet. Testosterone Implants only work if they are implanted under your skin.
Do not use this medicine if the glass ampoules are broken or damaged or if the product doesn't look right.
