Newt Demands Presidential Apology For DeNiro’s ‘Inexcusable’ First Ladies Joke
TPM ^ | March 20, 2012 | Benjy Sarlin

It’s hard out there for a white first lady.

Newt Gingrich is incensed about a joke by actor Robert DeNiro at a fundraiser attended by Michelle Obama for the president’s re-election, in which the Academy Award-winning star used the word “white” to describe the Republican field’s spouses.

“Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?” DeNiro said. “Too soon, right?”

The idea, of course, is that it’s absurd to question whether America is prepared for a white first lady, given that every single married president in history before Obama has been married to one. But Gingrich, speaking at a campaign event in Shreveport, La., saw something much more sinister in DeNiro’s joke: a blatant attempt to sow racial division. He even demanded President Obama personally apologize for DeNiro’s comments.

“I do want to say one thing, both on behalf of my wife and on behalf of Karen Santorum and on behalf of Ann Romney: I think that Robert DeNiro’s wrong,” Gingrich said, according to CNN. “I think the country is ready for a new first lady and he doesn’t have to describe it in racial terms.”

After condemning DeNiro as “rich enough he probably doesn’t notice the price of gasoline,” and “successful enough he probably doesn’t notice the unemployment rate,” Gingrich continued to express outrage over the line.

“What DeNiro said last night was inexcusable and the president should apologize for him. It was at an Obama fundraiser, it is exactly wrong, it divides the country,” he said. “If people on the left want to talk about talk show hosts, then everybody in the country should hold the president accountable when someone at his event says something that is utterly and terribly unacceptable as what Robert DeNiro said.”

Wow.

The older DeNiro gets, the dumber he becomes.

Ah, he is an actor. Overpaid morons.

I don't understand why he had to mention race or color.

It was stupid. If it was a joke, it was a bad joke.

because DeNiro is like most white obama voters - guilt ridden to the core and socialist/communist in their thinking.

I suppose it all depends on your perspective. There are times when mentioning race or colour is completely inappropriate, and there are other times when it can be rather funny, depending on the situation. DeNiro meant no offense or disrespect to the wives of any of the Republican contenders. If anything, DeNiro was making a joke at his own expense. By this point, it should be no secret to anyone who has paid attention over the years that DeNiro has certain personal preferences or fetishes. He was breaking the ice by delicately & discreetly pointing out the elephant in the room, what everybody already knows about him. DeNiro is a method actor, and there is a reason Angela Basset was cast as his girlfriend/fiancee in the movie he did up here with Ed Norton "The Heist" or "The Score" or something like that. Angela had more to offer in that role and brought a whole new dimension to the part, that not even such talents like Glenn Close or Meryl Streep could ever hope to bring. Mentioning race can be a delicate subject, but sometimees, it can just be funny. If you're not seeing it from the right perspective, or in the case of the Republicans wanting to make an issue out of it, then it can be skewed. To me DeNiro's comments were funny.

Newt needs to shut up!

Where was he in 2007 when the entire world was debating whether or not it was too soon for a Black president?

So now you can't ask the same question about a First Lady? C'mon, let's be honest here. Who is really looking to sow seeds of divisiveness along racial lines? See if Republicans were smart, they'd push Ron Paul front & centre. Instead they attack Obama on the stupidest things when there is so many valid reasons that can gain traction. Instead, they  try to pick at his support base using stupid useless tactics that only preach to the choir, but do nothing to erode his support base. If anything, it only causes them to dig their heels in that much stubbornly, realizing the futility of the useless diversionary arguments used to attack the man.

If republicans want to wrestle the White House away from Obama, they need to stop the mental masturbation that only preaches to the choir, and focus on issues that are important to his base. Have them saying 'Hey wait a minute... what about this indeed?' because...

Lost a lot of respect for De Niro when I heard this.  Are actors forced to spout off politically by hollwood moguls?

Newt complaining about remarks that divide America? He is the most hypocritical SOB ever.
He has based his entire political message along those lines
