McQueen died of lung cancer I thought.

Dokey111, it is kind of a long and weird story.

Quote
On November 7, 1980, McQueen died at the age of 50 in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, following an operation to remove or reduce several metastatic tumors in his neck and abdomen.

McQueen developed a persistent cough in 1978; he gave up smoking and underwent antibiotic treatments without improvement. Shortness of breath became more pronounced and in December 1979, after the filming of The Hunter, a biopsy revealed pleural mesothelioma, a type of cancer associated with asbestos exposure to which there is no known cure. By February 1980, there was evidence of widespread metastasis. While he tried to keep the condition a secret, the National Enquirer disclosed that he had "terminal cancer" on March 11, 1980. In July, McQueen traveled to Rosarito Beach for unconventional treatment after U.S. doctors advised him that they could do nothing to prolong his life.

Controversy arose over McQueen's Mexican trip, because McQueen sought a very non-traditional treatment that used coffee enemas, frequent shampoos, injection of live cells from cows and sheep, massage and laetrile, a supposedly "natural" anti-cancer drug available in Mexico, but not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. McQueen was treated by William Donald Kelley, whose only medical license had been (until it was revoked in 1976) for orthodontics. Kelley's methods created a sensation in both the traditional and tabloid press when it became known that McQueen was a patient. Despite metastasis of the cancer to much of McQueen's body, Kelley publicly announced that McQueen would be completely cured and return to normal life. However, McQueen's condition worsened and "huge" tumors developed in his abdomen.

In late October 1980, McQueen flew to Ciudad Juárez to have the five-pound abdominal tumors removed, despite the warnings of his U.S. doctors that the tumor was inoperable and that his heart would not withstand the surgery. McQueen checked into a Juarez clinic under the assumed name of "Sam Shepard" where doctors at the small, low-income clinic were unaware of his real identity. McQueen died of cardiac arrest one day after an operation to remove a large tumor from his neck. A following article in the El Paso Times noted that right before his death he awoke and asked for some ice and then died. Shortly before his death, McQueen had given a medical interview in which he blamed his condition on asbestos exposure. While McQueen felt that asbestos used in movie soundstage insulation and race-drivers' protective suits and helmets could have been involved, he believed his illness was a direct result of massive exposure while removing asbestos lagging from pipes aboard a troop ship during his time in the Marines.

A memorial service was presided over by Leonard DeWitt of the Ventura Missionary Church. McQueen was cremated, and his ashes spread in the Pacific Ocean.

Newman is too short.

Five-foot eight... at best. He used to lie and say he was six-feet tall

LOL. :D

He's shorter than Tom Cruise in The Color of Money.

McQueen was cooler. But he used to drink and smoke like a fish. He probably wouldn't have aged as well had his heart not given out.

But there is soething to be said for dying young. It does seem to add to one's legend.

"Live fast, die young, and leave a good-looking corpse." - James Dean

There is nothing to suggest dead "legends" know that they are legends. Personally, I would rather be alive then be a dead legend.

I guess height is a componant of one's looks. Although I would have to give up a couple of inches to look like Paul Newman did in every aspect, I think it would be worth it.....not that I am an ugly shit or anything....just not as handsome a Paul Newman. Who knows, maybe he was a jerk.

We had lunch with Dennis Newman a short while back he actually looks somewhat the same facially. As far as I can tell , he's aging well,

AND ...

JAMES GARNER .... One hell of a great guy. I was on the Rockford set a a number of times (we had mutual friends) and while we were waiting for him to take a lunch-break, he kept on messing up his lines in what was supposed to be an important scene and it took around 12 takes to get it done properly .......

ANd the first thing he did when the director yelled. "It's a take!" was to walk over to us and shake my hand first and say, "Hi , you must be "Stunt", I'm Jim and I'm sorry it took so long to get that scene right. Let's get lunch."

He had the Hollywood reputation for being one of the "Good Guys" .... and so did  Burt Reynolds when he first started out. Ditto Bill Smith, Woody Strode and Jack Elam, and everyone's best friend - Jack Tyree who was killed during the making of "The Sword and the Sorceror" which most of you have never even heard of.

Those were good Hollywood days back then when the studio would pretend that they were unaware when the stunt guys and gals borrowed film making equipment to shoot the motorcycle movies on the weekends ...... as long it was locked up on the lot before it was needed on Monday mornings.

If you were a Friday night drive-in movie fan back then .... you likely might have seen one of these films.

And some were big hits in the Orient

ANd there were others ... but not too many others.

Oh yea! I forgot the Brando story.

We were under-age and were told that we'd have no problem getting a beer or two on a dump of a bar called "The Lamplighter" a block south of Hollywood Blvd.

So one very warm summer afternoon we go in this place and take a table in the darkest cornor and sent the oldest looking one of us up to the bar to get the beers.

The dump was empty except for one guy sitting at the bar talking to the bartender and the bartender had no problem giving us the beer while talking to his only other customer who turned out to be Brando.

SO were sitting in the dark drinking our beers and Brando passes us on the way out and stops and says, "You guys look too damn young to be in here!"

We kind of said something like "Shhhhh", cause we were hoping to get another round but Brando yells out to the bartender ... 'These kids are underage! Put their next round on my tab!" ... and departed.

Two beers later on Mr Brando ... we were out and heading to the beach and met another star who should be on this list but I gotta look up his name.

He was the good looking actor who shot himself accidentally with a blank pistol while makikng a movie someplace in Europe. Any help"

Thanks, Brad, but here is a real sick one that will mess with your mind a bit.

This actually happened to Jon Erik Hexum and it shook up Hollywood for a good long time.

Jon was a promising new star and he arrived on the Fox lot to film a scene lying in bed on Stage 18.  He was playing around with a .44 Magnum prop gun. At around 5:15 p.m. he put the pistol (according to witnesses, it was loaded with three empty cartridges and two blanks) up to his right temple.

Just before he pulled the trigger he smiled, and said, "Let's see if I got myself with this one." He was apparently unaware that at close range, a blank can cause great damage. And damage it was. The explosion drove a quarter-sized piece of his skull far into his brain. Turns out that the blank was packed with paper inside, and it went straight into his temple and made a bone chip lodge in his brain.  Killed by paper.

A witness account: "John smiled and pulled the trigger. There was a loud bang and a bright flash, then black smoke. Jon screamed in agony, then looked kind of amazed as he slumped back onto the bed with blood streaming from a severe head wound. It was horrible."

I'll see if I can find his photo ...

Jeff Hunter was another good looking up and coming Hollywood celebrity who passed away at the early age of 42 after two strokes and a head injury after falling down a flight of stairs.
