If you could buy a laptop , what would you buy?
« on: March 26, 2012, 07:18:28 AM »
if the max you can spend is $3,000 , what would you pick?

Nothing too too big cuz it will drain battery fast, and nothing too too small thats gonna be slow.

I have had good experiences with dell in the past, i bought an HP envy15 last year, my worst buy ever :/

HPs are shit.  They are mostly made in mexico and the quality is bullshit.  Most of the gays will say buy a mac, but that means getting all apple software.  It bothers me when mac people tell me to buy one then dual boot windows.  Why would I buy a mac to dual boot windows?  Sony makes quality laptops but the problem is they have too much propietary bullshit they like to put in.  Remember the sony memory sticks?
Dells run hot as shit.  Hate dell laptops.

What is your main purpose?  Surfing the web, taking notes?  Are you looking to edit photos, make movies?  if the latter then go apple.

in addition to Normal day to day tasks  performing data intensive processings and algorithms ( hence the need for powerful computer).

i was thinking a core i7, with at least 8 gb ram and at least 128 ( preferably 256GB ) Solid State Hard drive.

i travel all over, it would be good if the battery lasts long, but nowadays some planes have power outlets, and i have an ipad which i can kill time with for 10+ hours on flights... so although battery is an issue, its not my #1 priority.

it would be somewhat of a desktop replacement, because i pretty much will do most of my stuff on this particular laptop, but i still have a desktop at home

i watch movies and shit while im at the hotel, so having a good graphic card, screen, and speakers are good too

3K$ on a laptop is rediculous, it can be top of the line shit but will still be inferior to an equally priced desktop in every way and the lifespan will be significantly shorter.

Here is something that is not pre-built, can take just about anything you throw at it and is upgradable.

Captain obvious is fucking obvious.

If youre using it for travel then you have no business spending $3k. Buy a netbook and call it a day.

I am on my 3rd Lenova and I would not recommend them at all. They are forced on me because my company supplies them. Our company purchases @ 800-1000 of them a year. Our buying contract is almost expired and we are going another route. I believe Dell. Dells have been tested in our company with great results.
One other thing, I think you can get a helluva puter for $1500 or less. Why spend the $3k?

Lenovo are shit now.  Cheap chinese owned shit.  The old IBM thinkpads lasted a long time, but the quality has gone down with Lenovo.  Toshiba has made a recent push back into the laptop market, but what you want is a highly custom laptop that won't weigh a ton either.

i shrugged off your link because you sound like a joke with that stupid comment you made earlier. but just as an fyi, i custom made a laptop using your link, and i didnt even go overboard, 12GB ram, core i7 processor, 240GB SSD hard drive, and it came to almost $2100

You didn't go over board (there are others that can exceed 3k like some sager models) because that company is a reseller that doesn't price gauge the shit out of their hardware. For laptops, that site is one of the best out there in terms of value.

Also, I didn't read everything you upgraded but i would wager that you'll never come close to needing 12 gigs of RAM, ever. Just my 2 cents.

You are luckier with them than me. I have had this T400 for not even 2 years and I have to get the board that lays under the key area replaced for the 2nd time. And mine is docked anytime I am in my office so all I touch is the power button. I have also had a USB port go bad as well. The Lenova's just seem slower than other laptops in their range, IMO.

1.) 13 inch MacBook air. Boot camp if need windows. Fixes your needs of solid state hd, i7, and thin and light with great Battery life.

2.) Sony vaio. Best windows laptops IMO.

3.) Asus also makes a nice looking air clone. Never used one tho

I wouldn't buy anything other than Asus when it comes to laptops.  The Zenbook, which HTexen mentions is super light, packs a good punch with the i7, 256gb SSD, 13.3" screen, graphics is Intel which isn't all that great but may not be important for your needs.  Only has 4gb of ram though, don't think you can expand it more, but not 100% sure on that.

Asus also makes some really solid "gaming" laptops that may be more in line with what you need, 8gb of ram, Nvidia 3gb video, 17" screens, dual SSD's, etc etc, the G74SX I think is the model.
