Alcohol addiction and declining marketability have sidelined Dennis Rodman and rendered him unable to pay an "unjustified" amount of child support, representatives for the former NBA player said today.

Rodman's manager, Darren Price, told ABCNews.com today that the former Chicago Bulls' rebound star has a "well-documented drinking problem, and all the stress from the divorce and not seeing his kids isn't helping. As people know, it's a daily struggle. He has good days and bad ones and good weeks and bad weeks."

While Rodman isn't in an inpatient treatment program, Prince said, "He does see a counselor from time to time."

The Los Angeles Times reported that Rodman's attorney Linnea Willis said Rodman "is broke and cannot afford any additional fees," in court papers filed today. She also said he is "extremely sick."

The filing came in response to allegations from the attorney for Rodman's third wife, Michelle Rodman, that as of March 1, Rodman owed $808,935 in back child support for the couple's 9- and 10-year-old children and $51,441 in back spousal support. He was previously ordered to pay his ex-wife $50,000 per month for child support.

Willis said in a statement that "even the wealthiest celebrities in the world" would not be ordered to pay $50,000 a month, and while Rodman hasn't been able to make payments of that amount, "it is absolutely untrue that Mr. Rodman failed to pay child or spousal support.

I didn't realize it took $50,000 a month to raise a kid. Apparently the mother is paying for a year of Harvard every month and still has money left ofter to feed the kids a healthy diet filet mignon and caviar.

post of the day!

Child support is what destroys so many of these athetes.  there really should be some 'cap'.  Cause an athlete goes from making $10mil a year to $0 a year, but that same 50k a month is sitll due for the kids.  Place it at $10k per month - that's only $120k a year, a guy can plan for that.

seriously, all these mansions, their entourage, even that is something that's easy to walk away from or stop paying and lose the mansion.  Kids seem to be what gets a lot of athletes.

The biggest scam is that courts don't determine how much child support the child receives solely on what it actually costs to raise a child but in part on how much the man makes.  I don't see why that money can't go directly into a  monitored account, without the option of cash withdrawal.

At the end of the year at tax time, the child support recipient should be mandated to provide receipts to prove that child support did in fact go toward the child.  All purchases should be added up to determine where that money went to and how much was spent.  What money is left should remain in the child support account and deducted from the overall child support requirements for the coming year.  If money was spent on anything other than child care, that money should be required to be paid back into the account or be considered taxable income to be paid by the woman.

I think there should be a predetermined set price for child support, regardless of the father's income.
I'm sure some analysts could figure out the average cost of raising a child, the minimum amount it
takes to keep them healthy and alive.
No kid needs 50k per month to be diapered and stay fed.

Many yrs ago my sister and her family were in a restaurant in Miami, where Rodman and Madonna were eating. So sis takes her friend's 5/6 yr old daughter to meet Madonna and ironically enough Rodman was as nice as can be and Madonna was a bitch to them....

I agree.  A lot of people feed, clothe and house an entire family for 50k a year.
