Police: Zimmerman story is 'consistent' with evidence in Trayvon Martin shooting

SANFORD, Florida –  A slain U.S. teenager and the neighborhood watch captain who shot and killed him exchanged words before the teen punched him in the nose and began banging the man's head on the ground, according to the watch captain's account of the confrontation that led to the shooting.

Because 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was black and George Zimmerman has a white father and Hispanic mother, the case has become a racial flashpoint that has civil rights leaders and others leading a series of protests around the country. Zimmerman said he shot Martin in self-defense and has not been arrested.

The Orlando Sentinel reported that Zimmerman told police he lost Martin in the neighborhood he regularly patrolled and was walking back to his vehicle last month when the youth approached him from behind.

The two exchanged words, Zimmerman said, and Martin punched him, jumped on top of him and began banging his head on a sidewalk. Zimmerman said he began crying for help; Martin's family thinks it was their son who was crying out. Witness accounts differ, and emergency tapes in which the voices are heard are not clear.

A statement from Sanford, Florida police said the newspaper story was "consistent" with evidence turned over to prosecutors.

Do I trust the Sanford PD?  No.  My brother shot a guy - it was on video - and they spent all night taking his statement, his clothes, his gun, and a ton of evidence - and it was about as clear-cut as a shooting can be, robbery in broad daylight.

The fact it was a late night struggle in the dark, and the evidence wasn't collected from the guy - that is really troubling.  Witness statements are great - but they're coming from people who were protected by zimmerman, against a guy who may have been doing the break-ins.  I find it a little tough to just take their word for it - evidence of the physical kind is much better.

props for this post.  good stuff.  I feel the kid was a drug dealer who may have caused this fight that got him shot.  but i also feel this shooter was irresponsible and reckless - and that the police dept may have not done their job with someone who was sort of, one of their own.  if he called the police 50 ot 70 times, there's no doubt he was always chatting with them and sucking up, in this small town of 53k people. 

I wonder if there was any relationship on a personal level between the shooting investigators, police brass, and this guy.
