How does Yates beat Flex in this shot? Bodybuilding judging has been very flawed for a long time.

Better balance & proportion , greater muscular bulk , better density & dryness that simple case closed.

Flex got nothing on Dorian in that pose. Dorian looks much better hands down. Strong look.

jaime,this pic is a bad one.. it's not head on... and flex is turned more towards the lens....
look ate the pic ND posted....
yates kills them both....flex was all arms, oil and aesthetics.... shawn well.... he was shawn... :)

conditioning - yates
size - yates
proportions yes yates! not one musclegroup was out of proportion compared to the rest....
also great v taper! quadsweep, and wide shoulders
symmetry again yes, yates!... leftside/rightside  and upperbody / lowerbody all equally developed....

flex had to many flaws.... just because he was all aesthetics, and flowed very good does not mean he should have won an Olympia... has was narrow as fuck.... no calves, arms all oil , delts as well in later years, a mediocre back compared to the big boys.
shawn very good bodybuilder, but lacks raw size compared to yates... also in fdb something is off... dunno maybe his legs are a little 2 short and has a bit of a long torso... but something is off...not a very big flaw but next to yates it shows....

yates was untouchable in his day! he reigned UNDEFEATED..... ronnie did not copy that, neither did cutler....
and i agree he looked worse in his later years... but he was still just as good as the top dogs... and to defeat a reigning champ you can not fight for points... you need to knock him out!!!

Whoa easy Optimus, you sound like you're getting a little juicy over Yatesy. He had conditioned mass. Super grainy, huge back. Also had muscle tears, legs didnt get sliced from the front and I thought had shitty shape. Never was a big fan but in the end of the day, nobody could match his back and conditioning

bro.... i hardly am getting juicy over some bb..... i met a woman named cristiane today , at my gym, that is worth getting juicy over!!!!! lol.... WOW.. :P

anyway, some people here act like yates had a frame like Kovacs or something....
aside from later tears yates had a very good frame! wide shoulders, great v taper.... sweep on his legs...
legs were not super sliced from the front... but good enough! bodybuilding is about the total package... and yates had a total package....
just saying it how i see it...
and the pics in this thread , yates is killing them all... really no contest!
i hate the pregnant look.. and yates post 95, got worse indeed... but he still was good enough.....

all lighting in this particular shot. dorian had the look of confidence in his eyes. he knew he was the best when he step on stage. and everyone else on stage knew it too. they tried to be like him and try to pose by him.

Yes he looks far better in the second pic. I have changed my perspective on this a bit after thinking about it, it is bodybuilding after all, so you do have to push boundaries and Flex never got the balance right. It is interesting what way you go with judging but i understand your perspective . I had Yates for 2-3 O's. Ronnie got a few he shouldn't have too, as did all of the others, Franco anybody? lol

Yes something is off with Ray in the pic, i think it's his leg length, Ry had a great upperbody but i never liked his thigh insertions.

Two things i respect about Yates.

He did things his own way.

He did not synthol all of his weak bodyparts, Flex was probably loaded with oil in 93, just not to the same degree as in latter years.

Oh and he wasn't a complete douche like the American guys were lol

I was never a huge Yates fan though tbh, but i respect the things be brought to the table, conditioning, density, balance.

I think Lee looks solid in the pic, not being able to get on theme park rides aside.

Nice selective quoting there.  You ignored my other point altogether.

Explain how he "squeeked" by most of his reign -- oh, and without the least flattering pictures you can find for a change.  I'll readily concede that his physique got worse as time went on, but he was always in shape (yes, even with the hurf durf LOWER BACK WRINKLE!  ::) ) and he was just too good overall for Shawn, Levrone, Flex and Nasser to beat him.
