Big GDP Miss: 2.2% Vs Expectations Of 2.5%, Composition Even Uglier

So much for the +3.0% GDP whisper number. Instead of printing at the expected number of +2.5%, the first preliminary GDP data point (two more revisions pending) came out at 2.2%, a big disappointment for a quarter which had a substantial boost from the weather. And while of the 2.2%, Personal Consumption came in strong - as expected, as it was precisely the factor most impacted by pulling in demand forward courtesy of "April in February", 0.59% of the 2.2% was an increase in inventories, something which was not supposed to happen as it means that the quality of the economic growth in Q1 was far worse than expected. Cementing the ugly composition of Q1 GDP was fixed investment which added just a paltry 0.18% - this is the number which is critical for ongoing cashflow generation and unfortunately, the very low print means that growth outlook for Q2 is now even worse than before and we expect economists will promptly trim their already bearish predictions for Q2 GDP. Finally, government "consumption" subtracted just 0.6% from the total number, a decrease from the 0.84% in Q4, which means that once again the government is starting to become less of a detractor to growth - a dagger in the heart to anyone who claims there is "quality" in GDP growth. And the number you have all been waiting for: At March 31, US Debt/GDP was 100.8%.

Come on and rationalize this for me so I can have a good laugh, drones. Two months ago you clowns couldn't stop slobbering over the Usurper and how he saved the economy via seasonal holiday hiring. Where are you guys now? I couldn't find a single thread discussing these ABYSMAL numbers on the front page.

the other day,, ,rush said "my callers keep asking me to talk about the GDP.  I will.  But FIRST, I want to talk about the rumors from UK that Egyptian men are allowed to have sex with their wive's corpses for 6 hours after death.  And women can have sex with women too.  It may be a rumor, but its very important to talk about it".

I could barely finish my turkey, swiss and cole slaw sandwich.  Shit was disgusting.  I changed it to espn radio.

So yeah - shit on the "msm" all you want for it - but we're not hearing about it because rush prefers starting off his show with muslim necro rumors.

I'm sorry, did I name Rush Limbaugh in my thread title or did I mention him in my statement? No, I didn't. I don't give two flying fucks about Rush Limbaugh. I took the Usurper approach to publicly calling out private citizens and named you, not Rush.

Try stepping up for once instead of your usual attempts to deflect and derail. You were one of the Obama drones praising his saving the US via holiday retail hiring. There were those of us who knew this was coming and you weren't one of them.

Please rationalize your moronic defense of him so I can have a good laugh.

the GDP is terrible.   economy is terrible.  things aren't getting better.  I've been saying this, and i've been criticizing clueless establishment nuthuggers like Romney who keep telling us we're in a recovery and things are improving, just not as fast as we'd like.

I think the overall trend continues to go in the 'we are fcked' direction.  Obama's just treading water, not leading a slow rebound like some repubs and dems claim.  This GDP is just a further example of that.  It's obvious to everyone with a brain that the GDP numbers are a clear indicator things aren't improving, jobs aren't returning.

But those with the most power to effectively share this info with the voters prefer to talk about deceased egyptian vaginal cavities.

WIll ya give me $1 for every post I can dig up where I say "I don't think we're recovering" or I poo-poo these recovery claims?

I like to point out when policitians say "yes, it's getting better" then "I can make it better doing the complete opposite".  It doesn't make sense.  Romney says thigns are recovering, then says obama's doing a terrible job.  to me, that doesn't jive.  It's one or the other.

rather than discuss facts, such as how the UK or Ireland are doing in comparison to the US after initiating austerity rather than stimulus I think I'll just take a page out of 333, Tony and Fury handbook and say.....

How are Greece and Japan doing after decades of stimulus and free money?  :-X

Move along, kid. You're out of your league when it comes to discussing anything other than Obama's jock size.

Still waiting for one of the drones to tell us how this isn't the God-King's fault after they spent months bragging about his saving the US via minimum-wage holiday retail temp jobs, haha.

Seeing as the drones want to deflect this onto any topic but the one in the thread title, since 2007 Europe has had more than $9 TRILLION transferred to it via the FED, IMF and other sources and they do not have the means to pay that back. So like the good little Keynesian drones that they are, they think giving them another $9 trillion will fix it. Only problem is that private lenders have watched themselves get burned in Greece so who's going to go out of their way to lend to the Euros now?

Oh wait, inflation doesn't exist (as evidenced by US gas prices, hahahaha) so they can just print to infinity.

It's Bush's fault.

Once the economy recovers, the Obama drones will claim that their messiah saved it.

If the economy gets back on track it will be in spite of Obama.

just because you think we had a MASSIVE GDP MISS doesn't actually make it true

here a bit of perspective for you Ireland had a 1.9% DROP in GDP in 3Q2011 and the UK had a -.2% in 1Q2012

the entire global economy is slowing down again so it's not suprising if we're at + 2.2% rather than  + 2.5%

maybe you should be glad you live in the where we're doing MUCH better than many other countries

Data points to weaker economic momentum
reuters ^ | 4/30/2012 | Jason Lange

Posted on Monday, April 30, 2012 12:17:49 PM by tobyhill

U.S. consumers boosted spending only modestly last month and a gauge of Midwestern business activity fell sharply in April, suggesting the economy entered the second quarter with less steam.

The Commerce Department said on Monday consumer spending rose 0.3 percent last month, just below the median forecast in a Reuters poll.

When taking into account inflation, which has been fed in recent months by higher gasoline prices, spending barely rose, advancing just 0.1 percent.

"The spending number is an indication that the higher gas prices we saw last month are taking their toll," said Todd Schoenberger, managing principal at the Black Bay Group in New York.

The Commerce Department report also showed consumer income rose 0.4 percent last month. Analysts had expected a gain of 0.3 percent. After-tax income climbed 0.2 percent in March when accounting for higher prices.

go figure that you weren't aware the global economy is cooling off or that countries who implented austerity are doing so much worse and we are

better to keep pretending that somehow Obama controls the universe and everything is his fault - well everything bad that is.  Anything good that happens is absolutely is not thanks to him or his policies

We are doing worse.   Things are not better.  The numbers are all bogus and papered over by cheap fed money.

The labor force is smaller than when this thug took office.   you call that better?

because you seem to be oblivious (as usual) to global economic conditions

It's not like our economy is doing just sligtly worse than before while the rest of the global economy is on fire

again, this is why it's pointless to try to have any intelligent discussion with you

How about you stick to ranting about communism, birth certificates and who poisoined Breitbart and I'll stick with calling you a moron

Compares the US to a dying continent and says Obama's doing a good job. How sad and desperate to save face for this failure.

Great campaign slogan: "Hey, it could be worse." Hahahahaha.

Guys, we need to re-elect Obama because we're only doing slightly better than Ireland! 4 MORE YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's pointless trying to have an "intelligent" conversation with you because you are a pontificating retard. You, in your infinite wisdom, offer no solution other than to print trillions more. Of course you can't even come close to explaining why it would work. All you know is that it just will.

Jog on, kid. Try opening an economics textbook instead of getting all your "knowledge" from NYT editorials.

And by the way, the US economy does not hinge on the fortunes of Ireland's economy. LOL. Fact of the matter is that the US economy continues to miss expectations, even after you retards spent months touting Obama's great job getting stores to hire temp retail workers for Christmas.  ;)

We're doing a metric shit ton better than Ireland or the UK

And yeah, let's just pretend our country exists in a vacuum and we're not in any way effected if the global economy starts to slow down

If you do that then you can get your panties in a twist and pretend that a POTUS that you hate is responsible for slight miss in projected GOP and then you can go on an obscure message board and bitch and moan about it

I can't stop laughing at this guy thinking that our economy hinges on the fortunes of Ireland's. Man you really are incapable of admitting that your God-King isn't doing a good job.

We're not doing any better than Ireland, by the way. You might want to open up an economics textbook and read about debt. Ireland was actually doing OK until they nationalized their banks and guaranteed their debt. But hey, why would I expect you to know anything about current events? Of course they were a victim of cheap money and massive stimulus that led to a massive real estate bubble, which are ironically the same policies you're advocating in favor of now.  :-X

Obama drones are pretty stupid people. No wonder you're driving a 20-year-old Nissan with your "successful" business.  :-X
