Really?  That is exactly how it should be!

Why should the taxpayer be on the hook for school loans?

Better for parents to take responsibility for their kids than the govt.

He was taken out of context.  He was referring more or less to getting an education

Here's a thought. Try doing what the supposedly dumb Sarah Palin did. WORK FIRST; save up some money; then go to school. Take some time off; work some more and save up more money; return to school. Of course, if you're a fine woman as she is, you can go the beauty pageant route down the road.

Or, you could go to community college and work, knocking out the preliminary classes early. Out-of-state fees, along with room and board, are what drive up college costs.

Back when I was in school (the finest HBCU in the Sunshine State  ;D ), a friend of mine had the exact same number of credit hours that I did one semester. We live in the same dorm and were both on the 19-meal plan. Yet, his tuition was over TWICE AS MUCH as mine was, simply because he was from Philly and I grew up in the Tampa Bay area.

The idea that the taxpayer is on the hook in totally insane.   It's a repeat of subprime in housing all over again!

What should be, and can be, are often 2 different things.
Not everyone has multi-millionaire parents with numerous off-shore hedgefunds being shielded by international criminals like the Romney kids.

Why should students even have to pay for higher education?
In some countries around the world, a university education is free.
It was in Libya, ...although now since the US led coalition chose to fund AlQ and topple the legitimate government of Libya, who knows if AlQ will continue to provide free University education to libyan students.

It's free here in the USA, too.....IF:

- you get a full-ride academic scholarship (courtesy of a good high-school GPA and blowing the SAT and ACT out the water).
- you get a full-ride athletic scholarship (football, baseball, basketball, etc.).
- you serve in the Armed Forces and get discharged honorably.
- your parents served honorably in the Armed Forces for at least 10 years and passed their GI Bill benefits to you.
- win some beauty pageants.

Somebody is paying for it.

In Libya, it was the state financing higher education for it's citizens using Libyan oil money. When gaddafi rose to power, he kicked out the British & American oil companies and decreed that the profits from libyan oil wealth should be for the benefit of libyan citizens, not to enrich the profits or American & British oil companies. He's been on the West's shit list ever since. His move to organize African & Middle Eastern states into using a gold currency was the final straw for a very desperate and broke NATO alliance flipping out over their levels of indebtedness & insolvency.

Why should students even have to pay for higher education?

Because people need to pay for the services they use and nothing is free?

Don't think that in the countries were students don't pay, higher education is free. It is not. Everyone pays for it, through confiscation (i.e. taxes) by Government edict.

And frankly, as someone who's been to University and has graduate degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics, and did all this while working a full-time job, I don't see why it's my responsibility to pay for -- that is carry -- someone else through school by paying extra. Carrying myself was difficult enough.

Believe it or not, there are some countries around the world that do not have taxes. At least there were. I know Libya was one of the few countries that didn't have the Rothschild's  banking cabal embedded. Now that AlQ is running the joint, they sure opened up  a rothschild's bank real quick.

This has nothing to do with my post, but I'll bite. I'll start by saying that I do not know if your claim about taxes is true, but even if it were it woudln't matter: Gadaffi, was more than happy to collect revenue from oil rather than squeezing blood from the turnip that is the Libyan people.

Back to the subject at hand: education is a service, and like any service people need to pay for the services they use. Even in places with "free" higher education, like Greece, the education isn't really free. It was just subsidized on the backs of the taxpayers and the bondholders.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if all governments, ...especially Western ones, stopped seeing their citizens as turnips to be squeezed? Wouldn't it wonderful if governments viewed themselves as being there to serve the people, rather than the people being used to  serve the state?

To me education is not a mere service, but a necessity if one is to have a sustainable future. One should look to the 7th generation. Any leader or ruler with the best interests of his/her people at heart will look down the road to the 7th generation

People perish for lack of knowledge.

There's an old chinese proverb that goes:

If you are planning for a year, sow rice;
if you are planning for a decade, plant trees;
if you are planning for a lifetime, educate people.
