Romney's cowardice keeps getting in the way
By Steve Benen

Mon May 7, 2012 3:25 PM EDT

Four years ago, shortly before the presidential campaign, John McCain was participating in a town-hall forum, and heard from a voter who wanted to share a concern. "I can't trust Obama," she said. "I have read about him and he's not, he's not uh, he's an Arab."

The Republican nominee, to his credit, took back the microphone and said, "No, ma'am. He's a decent family man [and] a citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues and that's what this campaign's all about. He's not [an Arab]."

Mitt Romney in 2012 is a very different kind of candidate, and we were reminded of that this afternoon.

[ Invalid YouTube link ]

For those who can't watch clips online, the presumptive Republican nominee held an event in Ohio today, and heard from a woman who thinks President Obama "should be tried for treason."

It was an opportunity for the former governor to show some leadership -- as McCain did in October 2008 -- and reject this garbage publicly. But true to form, Romney responded to the voter's question as if he didn't have a problem with her ridiculous rhetoric.

Later, after the Q&A was over, Romney was pressed by reporters on whether he agreed with his supporter's "treason" line. He said, "No, of course not."

That's nice, I suppose, but having courage after the fact isn't the quite the same thing as showing some guts when the moment calls for it.

It's not the first time Romney shrank when confronted with an opportunity to lead, and I have a strong suspicion it won't be the last.

 ;D  ;)
May 7, 2012

This weekend President Obama officially kicked off his reelection campaign in the swing states of Ohio and Virginia. The President’s appearances were amid banners with the campaign slogan “Forward.” The right wing has been trying to poison the minds of Americans against that slogan, kind of like they’ve been trying to poison the minds of Americans against the candidate himself. I can see why rightwingers dislike the term “forward.” It does highlight just how backward they are.

President Obama schooled Mitt Romney over Mitt’s assertion that “corporations are people.”  Obama said “Corporations aren’t people. People are people.” Mitt Romney knows some people who would disagree, but I think those people are corporations. Corporations are not people, but we all know some people who act more like corporations—like Mitt Romney, for instance!

In this weekend’s elections, Europe has become even more what the Republicans like to call “European.” Elections in France and in Greece both showed voters clearly rejecting the economic strategy of recovery through austerity. Trying to recover from a recession through economic austerity is like trying to recover from malnutrition with a starvation diet. Austerity isn’t working in Europe. I’m surprised they went for it. They had tried it once before... I think they called that “The Dark Ages.” At least the current brand of austerity doesn’t include mass starvation, plagues, and rampaging barbarians—but I’m sure those were all on the conservatives’ list to try.

There’s a group out there trying to “swift boat” President Obama, who call themselves “Veterans for a Strong America.”  Swift boating involves attacking a candidate for their strongest point. And Mitt Romney is basically immune—he has no strong points! The original swift boaters attacked John Kerry for being a war hero. These new swift boaters are attacking President Obama for getting Osama bin Laden. Well, now we know the things you have to avoid doing to avoid being attacked by swift boaters—don’t serve your country, and whatever you do, don’t remove terrorist threats.

there have been a lot of moments like this in the campaign - with rush limbaugh calling a woman a slut, for example.

Romney had the chance to step up and say "dude, cool it, that's over the line...."

He is what he is - he's a safe candidate.  he's not a bold man.  He can "default" his way into the white house with it.  He's not going to shock the world.  He's just gonna win 30% of the repub support, spend a lot more than everyone, get the nomination.... then just hope he's a boring and safe alternative to obama that people pick because "at least he's not obama".

Don't expect to see ROmney do anything bold during the campaign - it's just not how he works.

President Osama is going to get re-elected so you really don't have to do this propaganda campaign for him.  It'll be great for you because you'll be able to sit on your couch watching soap operas and get rewarded by dear leader as he takes money from real Americans and gives it to the protected class.  Oh, I forgot you will technically have a job because in President Osama's America there is such a thing as a professional victim.  Lucky you.

Congratulations fagg0t!

I wouldn't bet my house on it. Obama is losing in the polls to the winner of "the worst field in the history of the Republican party", is bleeding independents like a stuck pig, and is kicking off his campaign to half-empty arenas. Now, he's pandering to gays by having every major player in his administration say they support gay "marriage", because he can't do that himself (otherwise, he risk losing some of the one demographic that almost monolithically votes for him or any other Democrat).

Obama is in BIG trouble and he knows it. So does Benny, which is why he trying to convince himself and his ilk that Obama's a lock for re-election.

Of course, this act of his is old. It's well documented that Benny is too spineless to post on the Politics forum and take his beatings properly.

But, don't let facts like this get in the way of Benny's Obama-worshipping or cutting and pasting left-winged gibberish from Randi Rhoads.

And, as usual, void of any original material, Benny resorts to this. Despite the mods REPEATEDLY moving your threads to the Politics forum, you continue to post your Obama-slobbering material here. What a shock!  ::)

If you want to see a black man get whipped, watch what happens to Obama in six months, if he continues this downward spiral.

Or, if you can't wait that long, step up to the Politics forum with this foolishness and watch what happens to you. We don't you don't have the sack to do so. But, the invitation is always there.

Lets make it simple. Obama promised everything. He delivered nothing, except higher health bills, divided the country, and a lot more people are worse off then they were 4 years ago. He neglected the one democracy in the middle east, Israel. He also did one thing that will affect our kids - made the national debt skyrocket like a Democrat does, and not care about it.

Fact is, with Obama in office, no business wants to work really hard or start off because of his threats to 'tax' everything in sight.  Once we get back a Republican in office, even a moderate like Romney, business can once again start working.   Without business, there are no taxes.

I don't dislike Obama.  He and his cronies tried. They failed.  I like Romney - he is moderate.  Not too crazy to the right, and not too crazy to the left.

Remember, above all - the independents and the people of America want someone to lead.   Obama divided and many, many people are disappointed.

Whats really pathetic Ron, is that he had everything going his way. He was in the perfect political and economic position to get some important things done. But he let his ideology get in the way. All he had to do is drop the Health Care nonsense, drop the Dodd Frank nonsense, adopt Simpson Bowles, fight for it, and get it passed, approve the Keystone Pipeline, and then he would be cruising to re-election. But now he will lose.

Yeah, but six months out, after a nasty primary, the incumbent should be doing better than this in the polls. Im not saying that Romney should be viewed as a heavy favorite or even a clear favorite, but Obama is not in a good position, and he knows it, and the people in the White House that are around him know it, even if the campaign team in Chicago doesnt know it.

I really do think that some Economist/financial expert in the White House is giving them some straight, non bull-shit assessments of how the economy currently is and what it is likely to do in the next six months, based on what has occured with the GDP growth in the last quarter. And I think that is why you have seen Obama step it up with the demaguogery in the last month and why he doesnt even seem to be trying to get independents back.

You have to be impressed with him so far 33. The way that they threw back at the Hilary Rosen comment and the leaking of the empy seats at the Ohio State Arena. The McCain campaign didnt have this kind of fire power in 2008. And no way in hell would a Santorum, Gingrich, or Perry Campaign open up with a TEN point lead among independents.

Good.  Romney is gaining cred w me.

You dont have to say that man.

You've known for 6+ years that Romney was a phony who changed to whatever political ideology was popular at the time.

You've said he sucked for 6 years... now "he's gaining credibility with me" is weak, dog.

Just say "He's better than Obama" and leave it at that.  We argue but I really do respect the fact you don't take the official party positions of "Mitt is a credible conserative!" that the party jellyfish have to take.
