Tea Party Upstart Mourdock Defeats Longtime Indiana Sen. Lugar

By Kim Geiger May 8, 2012 Richard Mourdock has defeated longtime Sen. Richard G. Lugar of Indiana in the Republican primary, according to an Associated Press projection, ending the career of one of the Senate’s most pragmatic politicians and casting a cloud over GOP efforts to win control of the chamber.

Mourdock, state treasurer in Indiana, campaigned as a conservative alternative to Lugar. He became a darling of the tea party movement after he began a legal challenge to the terms of the Obama administration’s bailout of Chrysler.

Mourdock was endorsed by Sarah Palin and Rep. Michele Bachmann, and Lugar had the backing of the party establishment, including Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

Mourdock will face Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly, a three-term congressman from the South Bend area, this fall. The matchup is the preferred outcome for Democrats, who view Lugar’s ouster as an opportunity to pick up a longtime Republican seat.

"Richard Mourdock is this year's Ken Buck," said Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Executive Director Guy Cecil. Buck was a tea-party-backed Republican who upset the establishment favorite in the GOP primary in Colorado in 2010, only to lose in November. "Tonight's results make the Indiana Senate race a toss-up."

the fox radio host admitted it may have been age as much as the tea party movement, which has cooled, as evidenced by romney's win.

lugar was just geting senile at 80 years old, and his constituents know it.

agreed.  that's what the fox host said.  i didn't know his name - he must be the 9 pm til midnight guy.  used to be jason something.  After levin.

He played a clip of Lugar, after the CNN host challenged him on the age, on the fact he's been there 30 years...

Lugar was just so slow and delayed and out of it.  And this isn't a representative- this is a US senator.  scary.  glad to see him retiring.

i could go as high as three 6-year terms for senate.  that's an 18 year career.  but yea, 2 might be even better (not sure they'd agree to it).

you wanna keep the brains around - but the laziness and corruption and complatency... :(

Who wouldn't want to stay there for 36 years?  Don't Senators make something like $250,000 a year?  Just to occupy a seat and vote every now and then.  Plus add lobbyist campaign donations on top of that and you are  a guaranteed multimillionaire.

Cut these guys' pay back to the median annual income of the rest of the country and I bet you get better people in there.

Isn't the speaker getting the plane rides or did they do away with that now?

Still a ridiculous amount of money to pay some one for not doing their job.  Rank and file reps and senators should make more around the 60K range if Obama and the libs want to talk about fairness.

Of course they should. But things dont work that way when you can just vote yourself a raise.
Who's going to say no to that?
