and now for the rest of the story: Craig and his wife Jacquelyn ann were a couple on the move till drugs did them in.he was an ophthalmologist specializing in corneal transplants. he also was a bodybuilding competitor and an avid weightlifter.it said he finished 2 nd in a mr universe contest in teheran iran in 1965. he was also an airforce medical officer for 8 years until his discharge in 1969 with the rank of captain.his wife the daughter of a baptist minister was a cosmetologist and an airlibe stewardess.he was 36 and she was 28 at the time of the incident.
the bizarre drug trip came to attention last march when neighbors reported gunshots in the whitehead's rented duplex at3507 grand parkdrive in carmichael.at the time craig was a 2k a month eye doctor at kaiser hospital. a neighbor told sheriff's deputies whitehead handed his wife a pair of wire cutters and she gun in hand climbed onto the roof and cut the guidelines to the tv antenna causing it to fall.
deputies said the house was a wreck. the whiteheads had ripped out the toilets , tore up the walls,fired bullets into the walls,all in an apparent search for imagined bugs both the live and electronic types they said.
upon entering the house officers foundnumerous lewd books, and porn mags, also numerous photos both commercial and homemade.two films, a switchblade knife, a whip,and a cup with marijuana printed across
scattered about were numerous knives and spears.a large number of syringes and hypodermic needles both new and used.and a kitchen cabinet filled with various drugs.
while investigating the case mrs. whitehead had the officers check out her car saying there was strange wires hanging out of it. to be continued.
deputies who searched the cars found no wires, but they did find a tear gas cannister,a loaded rifle, two pistols,a metal box with numerous drugs;syringes,hypodermic needles, a boning knife, amd a switchblade knife. they also found bags full of dirty clothing and garbage and the couples daughter.officers said both whiteheads appeared to be high on drugs,and related that someone was using high intensity radio waves to control their moods.both had numerous needle marks on their arms.
the landlord said that the whiteheads had caused well over 2k damage to the new duplex.until a year ago dr craig was considered competent. his problems started when he used ritalin to boost his pep and energy so he could train and compete in weightlifting contests.
the article says he came in third in the mr america contest aau in 1963,4 th in the mr paris contest in 64, and 2nd in the mr america contest in 65. his probation officer said it was ironic that the same drug that lead to his downfall to becoming addicted and dependent upon it to the point that medical authorities believe it caused him to be paranoid and incompetent in his medical practice.
the probation officer said the whiteheads believed everything including their daughters doll was bugged and
he is in dire need of counseling along with strong controls said their probation officer, also recommending jail terms for both to dry them out.she noted that as late as june 23 they used kaiser foundation prescription blanks and a 40 dollar bad check to get drugs from a san francisco pharmacy.
the end was mr and mrs whitehead were put on 3 years probation with mr w sent to napa state hospital and mrs w home to her parents in texas. end of story. mr whitehead is believed dead.
