The Franciscan University of Steubenville has announced it will drop health insurance coverage for students because the cost of the plan is expected to double under Obamacare. The university also took issue with a federal mandate that their insurance plan provide free birth control.

The small Catholic school in Ohio posted a statement on their website stating they “will not participate in a plan that requires us to violate the consistent teachings of the Catholic Church on the sacredness of human life.”
The university told Fox News that in addition to dropping its student insurance coverage, it will no longer require students to carry insurance. The university said it would maintain their current health insurance coverage for employees.
”This is putting people in a position where they are having to choose between their faith and their morality — and now an unjust cost,” said Mike Hernon, vice president of advancement. “These sorts of regulations from the government are forcing our hand in a way that’s really wrong.”
Hernon said students must have insurance – either through their parent’s policy or through the university’s basic plan. The plan currently costs approximately $600 per year. However, Hernon said their health care provider informed them that under Obamacare, the policy would double in price to $1,200 and the following year it would triple.

“We couldn’t believe the price (increase),” he told Fox News. “We had them go back and reconfirm it. They said it was dictated by coverage limits that were released by the Obama administration.”
“At the end of the day, it’s the students who are hurt by this,” he said.

Hernon said the university had no control over the costs and would still maintain a health clinic on campus that did not require health insurance.

He said it was a difficult decision for the university -but they could not, in good conscience, offer a plant that would not only violate religious freedom but double and even triple the costs for students.
“It’s harming our students,” he said. “Obamacare is forcing these sorts of costs and immoral options on our students.

It has begun. This will not be the only case. Private corporations will do the same if obamacare is not struck down completely by SCOTUS.

You really are dumb.   When more people are forced to drop coverage altogether and people have nothing at all that is better?

BTW - RP was against obamacare.

Yes, 3333. He is that dumb. Sad, isn't it?

Do you notice that his responses always take the extreme view? There is never any sense of restrain or balance. Typical liberal.

Thank god you and 333.... are so balanced then.

One believes in fairy tales with the mental capacity of men living 1000 of years ago and the other one is convinced Obama is the Devil himself.

yet you only show one reason in your title and like many other Catholic Universities, The Franciscan University of Steubenville will continue to offer contraception to their employees.

and still they continue to offer it for employees so I guess the price is not an issue there

sounds like a typical excuse of a religious hypocrite

btw - the cost of $1200 a year is insanely cheap and I'm sure the parents would have been glad to pick up the slack as it's probably MUCH cheaper than adding their child to ther employer sponsored plan

only for students and now instead of getting healthcare @ $100 a month (and they could have easily passed along the additional $50 a month since the prior plan cost $600 year) they student are now free to go out and pay 2x to 5x that amount for a private plan

It sounds like a good idea. School is out and by the time the fall starts, ObamaCare may likely be ruled unconstitutional and it gets scrapped.

Then, they can resume giving students health care benefits again.

or they can just give their students the exact same insurance plan they give their employees

apparently there is no religious issue with allowing employees access to contraception so why is it suddenly an issue for students

Even better,  ANY Catholic or religious instituion can just create the group plan and require the students to pay 100% of the cost.  Creating the group plan gives them acces to group rates while not having to spend one precious dime of their money to pay the premium.

They obviously need that money for the much more hallowed purpose of paying settlements for the hundreds if not thousands of cases of child fucking that they allowed to happen for years (and no doubt this is not something that just started happening in the 20th century and is probably as much of a tradition in the church as mass on Sundays)
